Douberly - Department of Chemistry, Washington State University Host: Anne McCoy The first beam of helium droplets was reported in the 1961 paper Strahlen aus kondensiertem Helium im Hochvakuum by Von E. W. Becker and co-workers [1]. However, molecular spectroscopy of helium-solvated dopants wasn't realized until 30 years later in the laboratories of Scoles and Toennies [2,3]. It has now been over three decades since this early, seminal work on doped helium droplets, yet the field of helium droplet spectroscopy remains fresh with significant potential for addressing a diverse set of problems in molecular science. Analogous in many ways to cryogenic matrix isolation spectroscopy, the helium droplet is an ideal environment to spectroscopically probe difficult to prepare molecular species, such as radicals, carbenes and ions. The quantum nature of helium at 0.4 K often results in molecular spectra that are sufficiently resolved to evoke an analysis of line shapes and fine structure that demands rigorous “effective Hamiltonian” treatments. This lecture will focus on our successful attempts to efficiently dope organic molecular radicals and carbenes into helium droplets. AOT is an involuntary behavioral health program, initiated with a court order, for adults with severe mental illness or substance use disorder. It serves as a lesser restrictive alternative to involuntary hospitalization and a treatment option on the continuum of care for individuals with severe mental illness. Webinars will give an overview of AOT, including its history, empirical evidence base, implementation, and ethical considerations, both in Washington state, and beyond. The series is intended to be useful to both professional and community audiences. Continuing education is available. About the Speaker Diane Weiner, LMHC, is the assisted outpatient administrator for the Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery within the Washington State Health Care Authority. In this role, Diane oversees the implementation of AOT throughout the state, providing assistance and support to the behavioral health administrative service organizations that work to implement AOT throughout the counties in their region. Diane entered the behavioral health field after supporting two close family members experiencing severe mental illness through the challenges of accessing treatment and support. During this time, she realized both that she was skilled at advocacy and that many people lacked an advocate. This led to Diane obtaining her master’s in human services and mental health counseling. Prior to her work with the Health Care Authority, Diane served as a team lead for an assertive community treatment team and in leadership roles for her local National Alliance on Mental Illness. He is a Partner and Founder at Gliding Ant Ventures in Seattle, where he provides professional services and co-builds early-stage startups in the cleantech and deep tech sectors. He launched the SBIR Academy, an eight-week program that teaches deep tech founders how to apply for US SBIR awards, and created Deep Tech Dirt, an online resource and community that helps founders build their companies more effectively. Before this, he was CEO, Co-founder, and President of BlueDot Photonics, where he raised nearly $3 million in equity and non-dilutive funding and led the company's solar technology development. Earlier in his career, he served as an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company, held product leadership roles at Doosan GridTech, and worked with electric utilities as a consultant at Sound Grid Partners. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from MIT, an MPhil in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge as a Winston Churchill Scholar, and B.S. degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Washington. Despite this massive health burden, we lack basic knowledge about the sensory behaviors and physiological specializations that enable parasitic worms to locate and infect humans - processes that could be targets for novel therapeutic interventions. Dr. Bryant has developed Strongyloides stercoralis, a human parasite that infects around 610 million people and can be fatal, as a powerful new organism for performing mechanistic studies of human parasitism and the evolution of sensory behaviors. The S. stercoralis nervous system is remarkably similar to that of the non-parasitic nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, with common identifiable cell types. Despite these similarities, the sensory behaviors exhibited by S. stercoralis and C. elegans are significantly different. The central hypothesis of the Bryant Lab is that parasitism of mammals requires dramatic shifts in thermal behavior and physiology that arise from molecular and neural adaptations of the conserved nematode nervous system. The Bryant lab uses a range of techniques, including high-resolution behavioral quantifications, tools for neural silencing and imaging, functional genomics tools, bioinformatics, comparative phylogenomics, and optimized methods for transgenesis and stable line generation. During her lecture, Dr. Bryant will describe the lab’s efforts to identify the molecular and neural mechanisms that underlie the dramatic attraction of S. stercoralis infective larvae to human body heat. She will also present in-progress work that asks whether similar mechanisms underlie the temperature-driven behaviors of other nematode species that independently evolved to parasitize mammalian hosts, including human hookworms. Biography Dr. Bryant is a neuroscientist and a parasitologist specializing in the thermal physiology of soil-transmitted parasitic nematodes. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurobiology & Biophysics at the University of Washington. She received her B.A. in Biology from Bryn Mawr College and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Stanford University. She entered the field of nematode neuroscience as a postdoc in the lab of Dr. Elissa Hallem at UCLA, where she established the first methods for quantitative and mechanistic analyses of neural function in parasitic worms. At UW, her team uses an interdisciplinary, multi-scale approach combining expertise in neuroscience, parasitology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and genetics to understand the thermosensory mechanisms that enable medically important soil-transmitted parasites to locate and infect human hosts. Dr. Bryant is a 2026 McKnight Neuroscience Scholar, and the recipient of a 2024 NIAID New Innovator Award (DP2). She has also received several research awards, including the 2021 Boyer/Parvin Award for Excellence in Molecular Biology research, the 2020 Arnold Scheibel Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow Award, and the 2020 M. John Pickett Award for Outstanding Achievement in Postdoctoral Research.

Registration required. Is Zionism a movement of national liberation or a story of colonialism and dispossession? Most public debate insists it has to be one or the other. This talk makes the case that it's both, and that treating it as an either/or question gets in the way of actually understanding Zionism's history, its current crisis, and its possible futures. Drawing on history that ranges from French Algeria to the broader question of Jewish nationalism, this talk will ask whether Zionism should be seen as an exceptional case or as part of larger histories of liberation, nationalism, and colonialism since the late 19th century. By reframing Zionism in a series of wider contexts, the talk clarifies the stakes of the existential choices currently facing Israel and Palestine. The talk also offers a preview of speaker Ethan Katz's current book project, "Unsettling Histories: Zionism and Colonialism Reconsidered," forthcoming from Princeton University Press. Ethan Katz is Associate Professor of History at UC-Berkeley, where is also the Helen Diller Family Faculty Director of the Center for Jewish Studies. Katz’s first book, The Burdens of Brotherhood: Jews and Muslims from North Africa to France (Harvard, 2015), received several prizes, including a National Jewish Book Award. Katz has co-edited three other books, including Colonialism and the Jews, a finalist for a National Jewish Book Award. His newest book, currently entitled Unsettling Histories: Zionism and Colonialism Reconsidered is under contract with Princeton University Press. Katz has taken a major leadership role in discussions of antisemitism and Israel/Palestine on college campuses. He is the co-founder of two pioneering programs at Berkeley: (1) the Antisemitism Education Initiative, a program to improve the conversation about antisemitism through thoughtful education and engagement; and (2) The Berkeley Bridging Fellowship, a year-long program that brings together diverse students for discussions about Israel and Palestine. His research has been supported by numerous fellowships, including from the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism, at the Hebrew University.

The design and synthesis of highly active electrode materials, namely, the active thin film modified on the electrode surface that can facilitate the desired electrochemical reaction, are thus crucial for the development of high-performance electrochemical devices toward energy and environmental applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), also known as porous coordination polymers (PCPs), are thus highly attractive for electrochemical systems owing to their ultrahigh specific surface area, tunable pore structure in the molecular scale, and tunable chemical functionality within the nanopores. However, the electrically insulating nature and relatively poor chemical stability of most MOFs strongly limit the use of pristine MOFs in electrochemical applications. Since 2018, our research group in National Cheng Kung University has worked on the design and synthesis of chemically robust MOFs and their composite materials with electronically and/or ionically conducting properties, aiming for utilizing such highly porous and stable MOF-based materials in electrocatalysis, electroanalysis, and electrochemical energy storage. This talk will cover our cutting-edge findings in the fundamentals and applications of highly water-stable group(IV) metal-based MOFs, including the Zr(IV)-based MOFs and Ce(IV)-based MOFs, toward the use in electrochemical systems. In particular, this talk will focus on our recent studies regarding the roles of “electrochemically inactive” MOFs in electrochemical processes. The topics will include the use of highly stable MOFs as additives/fillers during the in situ synthesis of conducting polymers to generate MOF-polymer nanocomposites for energy-storage applications, the use of pore-confined metallic electrocatalysts in MOF thin films for electrocatalytic ammonia production, and the unique roles of electrochemically “inactive” MOF coatings in electrochemical sensing and catalytic systems.

Weston T. Borden served on the University of Washington chemistry faculty for 31 years. His research involved the use of molecular orbital (MO) theory and MO-based calculations to understand and predict the structures and reactions of organic and organometallic molecules. Sheila Borden received her B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. After a year at the University of Oslo, she joined the staff of the Royal Society of Chemistry, where she eventually became managing editor of the RSC's organic chemistry journals. In 2004, she moved to the University of North Texas to lead the JACS Editorial Office. Link: https://chem.wisc.edu/staff/sibert-ned/ Weston T. and Sheila Borden Endowed Lecture in Theoretical Chemistry "Exploring the CH Stretch Spectral Region with Local Mode Hamiltonians" Professor Emeritus Ned Sibert - Department of Chemistry, University of Wisconsin, Madison Host: Anne McCoy The CH spectral region has often been assumed to be so congested and plagued with resonant interactions that there is little information or conformational content to be gleaned from the spectra. We have recently challenged this assumption. A key to our success has been the ability of the Zwier group to obtain conformer specific vibrational spectra at low temperatures. These spectra have been used to obtain empirical scaling factors that, when applied to our density functional based model Hamiltonians, lead to results that allow one to fully extract the information embedded in the molecular spectra. We have developed this Hamiltonian, which has Huckel-like simplicity, to understand the spectroscopy of a broad range of molecules and clusters so that we can predict conformational preferences of a range of species that include alkane chains and cryptand/ion complexes.

You will need two sets of weights at least (5lb - 25lb range) and a chair. This class will include total body and focus on both large and small muscle groups. We will finish with core and stretching.
