A Hierarchical Approach to Scientific Image Analysis Using Topological Representations Abstract: Modern imaging systems generate increasingly large and complex datasets that demand representations capable of capturing the underlying structure while supporting efficient and scalable analysis. Extracting scientific insight from imaged data often requires segmentation, alignment, feature extraction, and characterization of physical properties. Topology-based approaches provide a means to capture structural relationships in complex images and support scalable analysis. This dissertation leverages Morse and Morse–Smale complexes as compact representations of scalar fields derived from imaged data. Utilizing the hierarchical structure and intrinsic geometry of these representations, this dissertation introduces data structures and algorithms for synchronizing, comparing, and interactively exploring and refining Morse complex hierarchies. Leveraging synchronized hierarchies, this dissertation introduces Morse complex-based feature extraction for machine learning and hierarchical image registration. Furthermore, adaptive modifications to Morse complex construction and simplification are developed for application-specific analysis, improving the accuracy and robustness of topology-based approaches. These adaptive representations enable high-fidelity topology-based pore network modeling from micro-computed tomography images of porous materials for prediction of flow-related material properties. Together, these contributions demonstrate the potential of hierarchical representations for scalable scientific image analysis and scientific discovery.

Open studio workshops at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts invite you to explore your artistic potential and the galleries! Feel free to bring your own sketchbook or current project to work on among new friends. As a part of the recent re-installation of the UMFA’s Mexican art collection, the collaborative muralist group Roots Art Kollective (RAK) created a beautiful mural for the space. This artwork spans the back wall of the new Mexican art gallery and features a quetzal bird. Find inspiration in this stunning mural, and the art depicting birds throughout the Museum, then create a painting on canvas featuring your favorite bird! All materials are provided. This workshop is for adults 18+. All levels of experience are welcome. RSVP is encouraged but not required. Attendees with RSVPs will be prioritized, but drop-ins will be welcomed as space allows.

Drop into AI office hours University of Utah faculty, staff, and students with questions or suggestions about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) at the U are encouraged to attend virtual office hours held by the AI leadership team every other Friday from noon to 1 pm. Attendees can use the time to brainstorm use cases, discuss best practices, understand what’s allowed, find collaborators, suggest new tools, and more. Office hours are one way the U is working to strengthen AI literacy—the most relevant discussions will be shared with the campus community, including via an FAQ webpage. Feedback may also shape future AI strategy and tool procurement. Looking for a free family activity in Salt Lake City? Look no further than the Utah Museum of Fine Arts! Admission to the Museum is free every third Saturday of the month, and there is always an art-making activity for the whole family. This Third Saturday you’ll create artful braids inspired by Japanese art. The UMFA has two beautiful swords on view in the Japanese art gallery. The masterful artistry of the sword makers is evident in the metalwork, but the swords also have intricate silk braids on the handle and scabbard. The art of braiding these ties is called Kumihimo. Find inspiration in the work of these masters of Kumihimo and practice in the classroom using a small loom and thread.

Join us for a panel discussion:Adam Rose (Research Professor in the University of Southern California Sol Price School of Public Policy) Matthew Fry (Associate Professor, School of Environment, Society & Sustainability, University of Utah) Kody Powell (Associate Professor, Chemical Engineering; Adjunct Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering, University of Utah) Adam Looney (Executive Director of the Marriner S. Eccles Institute for Economics and Quantitative Analysis) Scott Schaefer (moderator) (Professor of Quantitative Analysis of Markets and Organizations, University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business) Professor Adam Rose (USC) and a diverse panel of faculty researchers from the U will discuss climate economics, resilience, benefit-cost analysis, emissions trading, and the macroeconomic impacts of climate and energy policy. Rose has advised the United Nations on globally tradable emissions permits, worked with U.S. states on cap-and-trade and climate action plans, and studied the regional economic impacts of transitioning to renewable electricity.
