Workshop Name: Building Agentic AI Applications with LLMs Date: Saturday, October 10, 2026 Time: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. MDT Location: On campus at the University of Utah. No virtual attendance option. Location information will be provided by email to registrants in advance of the workshop (registration is required). Host: Majid Memari, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Utah Valley University Register via Luma This training is offered exclusively to verifiable academic students, staff, and researchers. About This Workshop: The bar for what AI-powered agents can do has been steadily rising over the past few years, and new innovations allow them to not only engage in conversations but also utilize tools, conduct research, and execute on complex objectives at scale. This course empowers you to develop sophisticated agent systems that can execute on deep thought, research, software calling, and distributed operation. Throughout the course, you'll gain hands-on experience in designing agents that efficiently retrieve and refine information, intelligently route queries, and execute tasks concurrently using orchestration tools like LangGraph and sound software engineering practices. By the end of the course, you will have a solid foundation in agent architectures and will be able to construct interesting agent-like integrations to complement your existing workflows and software stacks. Course Concepts:Fundamentals of Agent Abstraction and LLMs Structured Output and Basic Fulfillment Mechanisms Retrieval Mechanisms and Environmental Tooling Multi-Agent Systems and Frameworks Final Assessment Optional: Real-Time Agents Prerequisites:Introductory deep learning knowledge (including attention mechanisms and transformers). Experience from DLI’s Getting Started with Deep Learning or Fundamentals of Deep Learning is preferred. Intermediate Python proficiency (including object-oriented programming and familiarity with ML libraries). Tutorials like Python Tutorial (w3schools.com) or equivalent practical experience suffice.

Peter C. Mancall (Distinguished Professor, USC) will be discussing the deep history of European-Indigenous interactions in the Americas. Peter has just published the newest installment of Oxford University Press’s esteemed History of the United States series: Contested Continent: The Struggle for North America, c. 1000-1680. Campus Locations: Zoom Colleges & Programs: Health Sciences Programs Departments: Center for Health Ethics, Arts, and Humanities Full Description: Our October Literature and Healthcare Discussion will feature: Personhood: The New Civil War over Reproduction by Mary Ziegler Meeting Details Wednesday, October 14, 2026 6:00-7:30 PM MST Virtual Event: Click here to register CME Code: 81590 (Approved for 1.5 CME credit hours) Facilitated by Hailey Haffey, PhD: In Personhood: The New Civil War over Reproduction, Mary Ziegler analyzes the cultural and legal mechanics that led to the U.S. Supreme Court overturning its 1973 decision supporting abortion rights in Roe v. Wade nearly fifty years later in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Here, Ziegler examines the relationship of the court’s 2022 overturning of Roe in Dobbs to the broader anti-abortion movement and argues that apart from challenging the legality of abortion as a medical practice, the motivating legal goal for contemporary abortion opponents is the designation of a fetus’s individual autonomy—or personhood—in the context of constitutional rights. This question of fetal personhood as qualification for constitutional rights from conception forward is thus the more fundamental aim of the political movement against abortion. Ziegler shows how recognizing this shift in perspective on rights is necessary to understand the anti-abortion movement’s nuanced legal and political goals associated with fetal personhood that are still being pursued independent of the Dobbs decision. Further, Ziegler explores how the intersection of fetal personhood and constitutional rights has complex implications, as she explains, “if we understand personhood to be more than a shorthand for banning abortion, we can recognize that personhood is fundamentally a claim about equality in the United States, one with stakes beyond abortion.” Accordingly, conflicts over interpretations of equality and civil rights are central to this discussion. Join YogaSix Sugarhouse in the UMFA Great Hall Wednesdays, September 2 through October 14, to learn the art of yoga and explore the unique connections between yoga practice and themes in the UMFA galleries. All levels of experience and ability are welcome! There will be six sessions in all, and guests are welcome to attend as many as they would like. RSVP is encouraged for this free event. Attendees with RSVPs will be prioritized, but drop-ins will be welcomed as space allows. Looking for a free family activity in Salt Lake City? Look no further than the Utah Museum of Fine Arts! Admission to the Museum is free every third Saturday of the month, and there is always an art-making activity for the whole family. This extra special Third Saturday brings paper calaveras making, performances, film screenings, and food trucks to the Museum! This October marks the one-year anniversary of the two new galleries celebrating art from México, Central, and South America at the UMFA. A three-year collaboration with Artes de México en Utah and the Transformación Cultural work group created these beautiful spaces that reflect the richness of living cultures, identity, and art. Find inspiration in the Calaveras on view in the galleries and create one yourself out of paper! Calaveras are representations of human skulls and skeletons displayed during Day of the Dead celebrations. A calavera represents the departed soul and can be made of sugar, paper, wood, or other material. Week 9: Stitched by Design Welcome back from fall break, we're picking things up with thread and pixels. This week introduces machine embroidery, where a digital design becomes a physical, stitched-out pattern on fabric. We'll work in Inkscape, a free vector design tool, using the Ink/Stitch extension to turn your artwork into embroidery you can wear. Then we hand it off to our embroidery machine and watch it stitch your creation into being. You'll leave understanding the full pipeline, from a shape on the screen to a finished design. It pairs naturally with the sewing skills from week five, and opens the door to customizing just about any fabric you can hoop. No design or embroidery experience needed, just bring an idea and we'll help you stitch it out. Equipment and materials provided. Let's make it stick.

Humanity AI’s new $10 million Open Call, which invites U.S.-based organizations (including universities) to apply for funding that supports communities’ collective power to shape how AI is built, governed, and used. The Open Call will provide grants of $75,000 to $1 million for up to three years for community-led efforts focused on: Education: Shaping AI around the best interests of students, educators, and communities. Labor and economy: Ensuring AI enhances, rather than replaces, workers and contributes to an economy in which people can thrive. Humanities, arts, and culture: Enhancing human creativity and understanding while protecting the work of artists and creators. Within these areas, proposed projects should take one or more of three approaches: shaping how AI is governed and used; building AI on community terms; or challenging AI that does not serve communities. Humanity AI is particularly interested in efforts where those most affected by AI are defining the goals, shaping the approach, and driving the work. Projects focused primarily on AI literacy, encouraging adoption of AI tools, or research without a meaningful community leadership and action component are outside the scope of the call. A central emphasis of the call is community-led work, meaning that those most affected by technological changes are defining the goals, shaping the approach, and driving the work. Depending on the issue area, this could include students and educators, workers, artists, writers, scholars, cultural heritage workers, and organizations representing these communities. Week 9: Stitched by Design Welcome back from fall break, we're picking things up with thread and pixels. This week introduces machine embroidery, where a digital design becomes a physical, stitched-out pattern on fabric. We'll work in Inkscape, a free vector design tool, using the Ink/Stitch extension to turn your artwork into embroidery you can wear. Then we hand it off to our embroidery machine and watch it stitch your creation into being. You'll leave understanding the full pipeline, from a shape on the screen to a finished design. It pairs naturally with the sewing skills from week five, and opens the door to customizing just about any fabric you can hoop. No design or embroidery experience needed, just bring an idea and we'll help you stitch it out. Equipment and materials provided. Let's make it stick.

“The Constitution does not authorize Congress to create independent officers or agencies that exercise executive power.” For more than a century, Congress has created independent agencies designed to operate with some independence from presidential control, including through statutory limits on the President’s power to remove their leaders. These agencies exercise substantial authority over areas such as labor, communications, securities, consumer protection, and monetary policy. But the Constitution vests executive power in the President and requires the President to ensure that federal law is faithfully executed. How much control must the President have over officials who exercise executive power? Supporters of strong presidential control argue that officials who exercise executive power must remain accountable to the President and cannot be insulated from presidential supervision. Critics argue that the Constitution allows Congress to create independent officers and agencies, and that complete presidential control is neither required by the Constitution nor consistent with the nation’s history. The Supreme Court brought new urgency to this longstanding debate in 2026 with major decisions addressing presidential power over independent agencies. Those decisions strengthened presidential control in some contexts while leaving important questions about the scope and limits of that authority unresolved. What does the Constitution require, and how much independence may Congress give to federal officers and agencies?

Martin Chalfie, University Professor and former chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University. Full bio: https://chalfielab.biology.columbia.edu/people/martin-chalfie In 1939, the first director of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study, Abraham Flexner, wrote an article in Harper's Magazine titled "The Usefulness of Useless Knowledge." Flexner questioned whether our idea of usefulness had become too narrow for the wide-ranging, unpredictable nature of human curiosity, arguing that real discovery happens when scientists are free to explore without needing to justify usefulness in advance. Several Nobel Prizes have gone to discoveries that emerged sideways from what researchers originally set out to study. Chalfie will argue that "useless knowledge" is as necessary today as ever for improving human health and well-being, and will offer thoughts on how we can create space for the unexpected discoveries that drive future scientific breakthroughs.

Insights Tours at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts provide you with the perspectives of those who know these works of art in unique ways! These lunch-hour tours are a perfect midday break, and you can even stop by the Museum Café for a bite to eat! Explore the special exhibition For the Future: Collecting at the UMFA 2001-2026 through the eyes of Museum staff members. This 45-minute tour will provide insights into the works of art on view, their unique histories, and the ways the Museum stewards them. This free tour will be led by Alisa McCusker, senior curator at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts! American art encompasses an extraordinary range of creative expression, including Indigenous practices dating back thousands of years, traditional modes of painting and sculpting of European origin, as well as modern and contemporary forms engaged on the global stage. Alisa McCusker, Curator of European and American Art, leads a tour of some of the UMFA’s most noteworthy art acquisitions in the past 25 years that have broadened and deepened the Museum’s representation of the richness of American history, culture, and life. umfa.utah.edu… Alisa McCusker, PhD, is Senior Curator and Curator of European and American Art at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. She is a specialist in Renaissance art and works on paper and has curated and co-curated numerous exhibitions on a range of topics, including on medieval and early modern book illustration, Japanese woodblock prints, American Regionalism, and contemporary art in the American West. Previously she served as Curator of European and American Art at the Museum of Art and Archaeology at the University of Missouri. She holds a doctorate in art history from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Arts in art history and museum studies from the joint program between Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Museum of Art. She received a Fulbright full-year fellowship to Germany for her dissertation research.
