Artificial Intelligence, Sacred Responsibility. Navigating our Future at the Intersection

Texas Diabetes Institute · Texas Diabetes Institute

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming healthcare, from clinical decision-making and psychiatric care to education and operational workflows. As these technologies accelerate, so do the ethical questions surrounding their use. This year's Nursing Ethics Conference invites clinicians, educators, and community members to examine the promises and pitfalls of AI in healthcare.Speakers will trace the history of disruptive medical technologies, explore how healthcare institutions evaluate and adopt emerging tools, and address issues of trust, accountability, and patient safety, particularly in mental and behavioral health settings. An interdisciplinary panel will discuss how misinformation fuels moral distress among healthcare professionals. The program will conclude with an Oxford-style debate on whether integrating AI into medical and nursing education will ultimately produce more skilled clinicians. Since 2008, the Nurse Ethics Council at University Health has hosted this annual conference to promote ethics education and interdisciplinary dialogue. In 2026, University Health is partnering with the Charles E. Cheever Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics at UT Health San Antonio to deliver a thought-provoking keynote presentation.
