Thursday, July 30 1:00–3:00 p.m. PT Speaker: Ginna Olsen and Heather Simmerman, Asian art scholars and SDMA Docents Virtual Event Join the Asian Arts Council in exploring the history of two important Buddhist sculptures in the SDMA collection. Ginna Olsen will discuss the 6th century Chinese Bodhisattva stone sculpture and Heather Simmerman will present the 17th century Japanese Amida Buddha wood sculpture, all currently on view in the SDMA Asian Gallery 7. They will contextualize the sculptures to position them within the history of Chinese and Japanese Buddhist art, respectively. The religious, political, and social messages that were conveyed through their creation and iconography will also be explained. Speaker Bios: Ginna Olsen graduated from the University of Redlands with a B.A. in Art History, then earned her M.A. in Art History with an emphasis on Asian Art at USC. She retired in 2019 from a career in business and has been a docent at SDMA since 2021. Heather Simmerman earned a B.A. in Biology from Northwestern University, a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Indiana University, and in 2025 received a Post Graduate Certificate in Asian Art from SOAS University of London. She is currently studying for a Certificate of Achievement in Japanese at MiraCosta College. Heather has been a docent at SDMA since 2023. Saturday, August 8 10:15 a.m.–noon SDMA Boardroom Be part of the Art of Reading Book Club, where art, literature, and art history converge. Join fellow Museum members in August to discuss Keeping an Eye Open: Essays on Art by Julian Barnes. This collection of essays by Booker Prize-winning author Julian Barnes explores the lives and work of major artists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Featuring works like The Raft of the Medusa and artists such as Édouard Manet and Lucian Freud. Insightful, engaging, and deeply human, this collection is perfect for anyone who’s ever stood before a painting and wanted to understand what it was saying—and why it matters. Second Thursdays, monthly 9:50-10:30 a.m. The San Diego Museum of Art Join Museum docents for a family-friendly tour designed especially for young learners and their caregivers. Enjoy interactive conversations, close-looking activities, and age-appropriate storytelling that help families explore works from The San Diego Museum of Art’s permanent collection and special exhibitions while discovering artistic elements such as color, shape, texture, and storytelling in art. Each tour is inspired by the day’s Storytime theme, creating meaningful connections between books and works of art. Participants will be encouraged to share their observations, ask questions, and engage with artworks through imagination and play. Please arrive at 9:50 a.m. to check in with Museum docents at the front steps of The San Diego Museum of Art and prepare for the tour. The tour will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. when the Museum opens and concludes at 10:30 a.m., when docents will guide families directly to The San Diego Museum of Art Library for Storytime. Together, the tour and Storytime offer a unique opportunity for children and caregivers to connect art, literacy, and creativity through a shared museum experience. Recommended for families with children ages 3–8. All ages are welcome. Includes Museum admission. Advance registration requested. Second Thursdays, monthly 10:30-11:30 a.m. The San Diego Museum of Art Library Gather to listen to exciting storytelling in The San Diego Museum of Art Library. Each month, Storytime explores a new theme inspired by works from the Museum’s permanent collection, special exhibitions, and the elements of art. Through engaging read-alouds, interactive songs, and a hands-on art activity, children and their caregivers are invited to discover connections between books, art, and the world around them. Entry to The San Diego Museum of Art Library is near the Panama 66 restaurant. No reservation is required.
