JUMBO BRAIN JUMBO DRAIN (JBJD), the newest artwork by multidisciplinary artist Canda is now on view as part of the Richmond Avenue Art Trail through Redbud Arts Center. The concept behind JBJD centers on the idea that the brain is our greatest strength and, at the same time, our most delicate responsibility. We have only one brain, and sustaining it requires continuous care and balance—much like a balloon suspended within the skull. The work also reflects how closely our mental well-being is tied to our environment. Our brains respond to experience, and when our surroundings are damaged or neglected, our experiences—and in turn our inner lives—are affected as well. Caring for the environment is therefore inseparable from caring for ourselves.

Handmade paper as art and craft is little known. Even though paper has been around for 2,000 years, contemporary hand papermakers work in relative obscurity, often unknown, except to other papermakers. To show the beauty and diversity of papermaking, eight papermakers were paired with fifteen printmakers to feature original prints made on handmade paper. A call was put out to hand papermakers around the country and papers were sent from North Carolina, Minnesota, Maryland, Vermont, New Mexico, New Hampshire and Texas. In all, eight artisans provided enough paper for fifteen PrintHouston printmakers from Kansas, Colorado, New York, and Texas to participate in this exhibition. Echoes & Reverberations: Everyone Is an Artist & Engineer™ is a traveling exhibition that traces how Black communities across the African Diaspora have shared knowledge for more than 400 years through pattern, geometry, quilt codes, and expressive arts using reused and found materials. From ancestral fractals and coded textile systems to contemporary works produced through C-STEM, the exhibition highlights a living lineage of innovation—where cultural expression, mathematical thinking, and material practice converge—and its enduring influence on today’s technological and creative landscape. “When we say everyone is an artist and an engineer, we are naming a truth carried through Black communities for generations. Houston-area businesses participating in this campaign are paired with local artists to decorate 36-inch soccer balls, which are displayed around the city. Funds raised through this campaign go directly toward the FIFA World Cup 2026 Houston™ Host Committee’s legacy programs, which include providing underserved youth in the community with access to club soccer, minimizing environmental impact through sustainability programming, and protecting human rights. About the Harris County–Houston Sports Authority and the Sports Authority Foundation The Harris County–Houston Sports Authority (HCHSA), founded in 1997, is responsible for servicing the debt of the world-class sports facilities it was created to build and ensuring their long-term sustainability. Mychal will be discussing his debut picture book I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Library Joy followed by a Q&A, and a book signing. This event is part of our Summer Reading Program and our Summer Reading for Grown-ups Program. About the author Mychal Threets is a librarian, literary ambassador, and the library’s number one fan (according to himself, admittedly). He grew up in Fairfield, CA, right between Sacramento and San Francisco. He was raised in his local library as a home-school kid. He got his first library card at the age of five and was hooked on libraries from there. He got his first library job as a library shelved at the library he grew up in and worked his way up to become Supervising Librarian of that very same library. He is very open about his mental health. He talks about it in hopes that it’ll help others in their mental health journey. He is adamant about encouraging people to believe him when he says he’s happy, they are here. He considers it an honor to the library people who raised him that he is a recipient of the 2023 “I Love My Librarian” award from the American Library Association, one of School Library Journal’s 2024 Movers and Shakers, and one of TIME Magazine’s 2024 Next Generation Leaders.

Tender / ofoldslowsecrets is solo exhibition of sculptural works by Katrina Moorhead. The exhibition unfolds as a living proposition — one that resists fixed meaning and embraces slow transformation. Moorhead’s practice draws on tenderness as a material condition. Working across a wide range of media, she engages with ancient ideas and the imperceptible rhythms of the natural world — geological shifts, the creep of moss, the patience of mineral formation — phenomena so gradual they exist largely beyond the threshold of human perception. Her sculptures do not simply depict these forces; they embody them. Tender / ofoldslowsecrets takes an experimental approach to display. Rather than presenting objects in fixed positions, works will be repositioned throughout the course of the exhibition, so that each visit offers a genuinely different encounter. The relationships between objects — how they face one another, what they shadow, what they echo — become part of the work itself. The gallery space becomes a slow choreography. Materiality is central to Moorhead’s thinking. Her sculptures are conceived not as finished objects but as ongoing events: surfaces will develop, textures will shift, and the works will register the passage of time across the exhibition span. Joining them as active participants are baked goods and floral tributes — perishable presences that introduce cycles of offering, decay, and renewal into the sculptural field. Nothing here is inert.

Sofia Gubaidulina (1931 – 2025) – “Le Grand Tango” Mario Zelaya, Violin Hailed for his early technical brilliance, Honduran-born violinist Mario Zelaya made his solo debut at age 15 during a tour of Central America and was soon after appointed concertmaster of the Honduran Philharmonic. He achieved international recognition during his graduate studies, winning first prize at the Cremona International String Competition in Italy, along with special awards for Best Bach and Best Virtuoso Piece. An exceptionally versatile artist, Zelaya has performed extensively across Europe, Central America, and the United States as a concert soloist, orchestral leader, and cross-genre collaborator. He has performed with premier ensembles including the Palm Beach Symphony, Florida Grand Opera, and NuDeco Ensemble, and his diverse portfolio includes a featured concert recording with the classic rock band Kansas and a live-streamed performance for the ESPN F1 Miami Grand Prix. He holds both a Bachelor and Master of Music in Violin Performance from the Lynn Conservatory of Music, where he studied under Guillermo Figueroa. Currently based in Houston, Zelaya serves as adjunct faculty at Lone Star College and directs the Zelaya Violin Studio. Alisiya Boiko, Piano Born in Ukraine, Alisiya Boiko began her musical journey at the age of three and made her orchestral debut at age nine as a soloist with the Dnipropetrovsk Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. Her exceptional talent later took her to Poland, where she attended the prestigious Karol Szymanowski State Music School in Warsaw under a five-year scholarship from the Polish Ministry of Culture. She has earned top prizes at international competitions and festivals across the United States, Poland, Germany, Lithuania, and Ukraine. Boiko is a highly sought-after soloist, chamber musician, and collaborative artist. She recently earned her Master of Music in Piano Performance from the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston under Timothy Hester, where she also served as a graduate teaching assistant and assistant director for the AURA Contemporary Ensemble. A passionate advocate for her homeland, Boiko has organized and performed in numerous high-profile benefit concerts for the Ukrainian people since 2022, partnering with Candlelight Concerts, the University of Houston, and regional arts centers.

A geophysicist with a PhD, he studied at the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Working primarily in oil, Kairat combines glazing, impasto, layered, and alla prima techniques. His exhibition Homeland and Roads features scenes of Kazakhstan, travel-inspired works, and paintings reflecting his love of tennis. His works are held in private collections in the United States. Gordon Education is excited to announce its 2026 Summer Film Camps, offering four immersive programs for young creatives aged 9 to 17. Each filmmaking camp focuses on a different genre: Historical, Changemakers, Documentary, and Narrative Fiction, allowing aspiring filmmakers to explore the art of cinema from multiple perspectives while developing their own voice. Narrative Fiction Filmmaking Camp | Ages 9 – 13 | 9 am – 3 pm July 13-17 at St. Paul’s School Young storytellers unleash their wildest creative visions in this story-driven filmmaking camp. Whether their movie is set in outer space or under the sea, campers have full artistic license to bring their unique ideas to the screen. Together, they will write, film, direct, and act in an original production, using the “Hero’s Journey” as a roadmap to learn the essentials of storytelling. Camp Leaders for the Time-Traveling Historical Camp are Dan Gordon and Bri Guerrero. Dan Gordon leads the Changemakers and Documentary Camps, and Bri Guerrero leads the Narrative Fiction Camp. Special Exhibition: “ATACAMA (photography)” – Renewable Energy and Mining in Chile’s Atacama Desert

ATACAMA is a seminal exhibition by photographer Jamey Stillings which explores the evolving nexus between renewable energy and mining in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Stillings’ interest in the human-altered landscape and his environmental concerns are principal pillars of his work. This exhibit’s subject matter is far from Houston, but ATACAMA’s relevance certainly hits close to home. As the global leader in copper production and the second-largest producer of lithium, Chile’s environmental practices are directly tied to our daily lives.

In addition to the opening reception scheduled for Thursday, May 21st from 6pm to 9pm, this exhibition also includes a special award ceremony hosted by a special guest juror, sports commentator and “crack” Glenn Davis. Artist Rebecca Pugh presents a solo exhibition of abstract paintings, “To the Horizon,” in Sabine Street Studios, North Gallery. The exhibition features a selection of her recent and new works including an 18 ft. long painting installation abstracting a memory of driving past a fallen wooden fence during summer drought. Pugh is inspired by colors and shapes that she sees in the landscape, most recently on her long-distance commute between Houston and College Station to teach at Texas A&M University. She is drawn to repetition of line, shape and color – like grass, wildflowers, cattle and ranch fences on the side of highways. While driving, she records voice notes and works from her memories and ideas in her studio. In her paintings, she uses angular shapes inspired by spaces in between fence posts, railings and twisted barbed wire in the Texas landscape. She often mounts shapes of paper containing graphite mark-making to suggest wind in grass, speed or direction of traffic. Pugh’s title for this exhibition refers to her interest in abstracting the landscape below sky, as well her feeling of driving to the horizon when she sees the downtown Houston skyline in the distance from the top of a stacked I-45 interchange on her way home. The exhibition “To the Horizon” is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance. A geophysicist with a PhD, he studied at the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Working primarily in oil, Kairat combines glazing, impasto, layered, and alla prima techniques. His exhibition Homeland and Roads features scenes of Kazakhstan, travel-inspired works, and paintings reflecting his love of tennis. His works are held in private collections in the United States. Becoming to Empowering: 400 Years of STEM – Traveling Exhibit

The Journey C-STEM was awarded two grants from the 400 Years of African American History Commission to develop an art exhibit as part of a national cohort dedicated to planning, developing, and implementing programs celebrating African American history and contributions. Additional funding was provided by the Houston Arts Alliance and Education Consulting Services, LLC, further supporting the creation and expansion of the exhibit. The artwork featured in this exhibit is inspired by the creativity and ingenuity of students in PreK-12 who have participated in C-STEM programming. Utilizing leftover materials from more than two decades of hands-on STEM education, these materials have been repurposed to create a compelling and immersive artistic experience that reflects the transformative power of STEM and the arts. The exhibit will open May 2, 2026, at the African American Research Center at the Gregory Campus, one of two Houston Public Library research libraries.

An innovative new science exhibition on cancer is coming to Houston and will explore groundbreaking research, advanced medical technologies and promising new therapies. The Journey to End Cancer: From Cause to Cure will make its national premiere at The Health Museum on March 7, 2026, and be available until September 13, 2026. Designed for both adults and children, “The Journey to End Cancer: From Cause to Cure,” is a 5,000-square-foot exhibition full of multimedia experiences, thought-provoking science interactives, dynamic animations, stunning data visualizations and inspiring first-person videos to engage and empower visitors. The exhibition is presented by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, one of the world’s most respected centers focused on cancer patient care, research, education and prevention. It was produced in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health. “Cancer affects us all, whether personally or through someone we love. But there has never been a moment like this in cancer care and research,” said Peter W.T. Pisters, M.D., president of MD Anderson. “Breakthroughs are happening at an unprecedented pace, unlocking a new understanding of the disease and powerful new therapies that will transform outcomes, both for patients and those who want to reduce their risk. This exhibition provides an incredible opportunity to educate, engage and empower people of all ages as we work together to end cancer.” The exhibition includes a chance to become a cancer detective, using cutting-edge tools to detect cancer in different parts of the body. Visitors also can play an engaging, interactive game that reveals how seemingly simple, everyday choices can help reduce cancer risk. In other interactive experiences, visitors can supercharge the superheroes of the immune system to stop rogue cancer cells. Exhibit-goers also can enter an immersive media experience to view a microscopic universe inside their bodies and explore ideas for future cancer detection, from liquid biopsies to cancer-sniffing dogs. Throughout the experience, visitors will hear stories from survivors and clinicians who reveal the personal challenges they go through each day, providing a unique window into the emotional realities of facing cancer. If visitors need a moment of calm, they can visit a soothing sound and light experience that spotlights the role of therapies like meditation and yoga in cancer care. The Main Gallery will feature an original exhibition, “Chromatica: A World in Color.” Organized like a color wheel, the exhibit includes a wonderful array of art from paintings, to textiles, to sculpture and more. A Maker Space brings hands-on fun to the exploration of color, with craft stations, a LEGO® build station, sound and light panel, and other fun activities. Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, first published in 1865, Finding Alice: Artists Exploring Wonderland featuring Abelardo Morell explores the enduring influence of the classic story on artists across generations through photography, illustration, and book arts. Finding Alice: Artists Exploring Wonderland featuring Abelardo Morell features works from two photographic series by the acclaimed artist Abelardo Morell, alongside multiple illustrated editions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The exhibition includes work by Andrea D’Aquino, Salvador Dalí, Camille Rose Garcia, Yayoi Kusama, Oleg Lipchenko, Peter Newell, Evgeny Alexandrovich Shukaev, among others. Of his initial Alice in Wonderland series, Morell says, “I designed my images to be situated within a landscape made of books because it struck me that [Lewis] Carroll had linked Wonderland to the idea of discovering imagination by digging deep into the pages of a book. At this time my daughter, Laura, was seven years old and these pictures felt in part to be tributes to her, who like Alice, was an equally brave girl in my life.” During the COVID-19 pandemic, Morell began a second body of work, Through the Looking Glass, shaped by the experience of sheltering in place. Morell found parallels between Carroll’s story and the uncertainties of contemporary life. Morell says, “Alice’s rolling with the punches supplied me with an instructive guide to living in turbulent times. Brave Alice learns to deal with the irrational without ignoring it. She makes her own sense out of nonsense.” About the Artist Abelardo Morell and his family fled Cuba in 1962 and settled in New York City. He is widely recognized for his camera obscura photographs created in locations around the world. His major retrospectives include Abelardo Morell and the Camera Eye at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Abelardo Morell: The Universe Next Door at the Art Institute of Chicago, which later traveled to the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Morell has received numerous honors, including fellowships from the CINTAS Foundation and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award, and a Lucie Award for Achievement in Fine Art. His work is held in major public and private collections worldwide. He lives and works in Boston and is exclusively represented by the Edwynn Houk Gallery, New York.

Get ready for an action-packed morning with the National Organization of Minority Architects, Houston, and Architecture Center of Houston, where design and skateboarding will collide. What makes a skatepark unforgettable? Is it the bowls, a challenging stair set, a perfect handrail, or a quarter pipe that keeps riders coming back? In this hands-on workshop, students will explore how skateparks are designed to challenge, inspire, and bring communities together. Students will work in groups to sketch, design, and build elements for a new community skatepark. At the end of the workshop, students will be able to share their designs and receive feedback from architects and use mini skateboards to experience their parks. Immersed in the current exhibition at the Architecture Center of Houston, Kinetics of Urban Movement, students will be able to draw inspiration from the photographs, 3D-printed models, and skate park sculptures on display. Shane Yee, Rodrigo Gallardo, and Bobby King with Skate Ecosystems will share their experiences designing and riding skateparks. Workshop Highlights: Students will work in teams of 5-6 students. Each team member will select a different element to add to the skatepark. Students will draw, build, and sculpt their skatepark elements. Teams will present their designs to the group, explaining features and design choices. Architects & designers will be on hand to guide participants, answer questions, and share experiences. The Menil Collection presents “John Akomfrah: The Hour Of The Dog”, an immersive, six-channel video and sound installation by the Ghanaian-born British artist Sir John Akomfrah (b. 1957). The work, co-commissioned by the Menil and the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA), explores the history of youth-led Civil Rights–era activism in the American South from 1954 to 1963. The 51-minute work is best experienced in its entirety, and will be on view at the Menil through October 11, 2026.
Hooks-Epstein Galleries presents “Golden Hour”, a summer group exhibition featuring the work of Houston-based artists Angel Oloshove, Liv Johnson, and Gaby Hurtado-Ramos. The exhibition opens Saturday, June 27, 2026 with an Artists’ Reception from 5:00-8:00PM. The exhibition brings together three contemporary artists whose distinct visual languages collectively evoke golden hour as both a visual experience and a threshold between states of being. Through a captivating multi-medium dialogue, the artists explore transformation across material, environmental, and social contexts. Infused with the warmth and sentiment of summer, “Golden Hour” reflects on the lingering quality of longer days and those brief moments when light softens, perception shifts, and the familiar appears newly illuminated. Angel Oloshove’s sculptural practice explores the intersection of physical and digital realms through ceramics. Working with a material forged by elemental forces, she approaches clay as both medium and metaphor, translating ideas of change, ritual, and becoming into tangible form. Recent works draw inspiration from celestial beings and figures circulating across internet culture and AI-generated visual landscapes, transforming fleeting digital phenomena into tactile forms. From this alchemic process, Oloshove creates enduring objects that bridge ancient mysticism with contemporary image production, inviting reflection on the relationship between technology, spirituality, and material presence. Through intricate, layered printmaking processes, Liv Johnson constructs immersive landscapes that examine the destabilizing effects of environmental change on familiar surroundings. Drawing from idealized and curated environments, she creates places where beauty and unease coexist. Though figures are absent, traces of their influence remain; yet, vibrant vegetation, heightened color, and subtle disruptions suggest natural forces moving beyond human control. These works underscore Johnson’s exploration of ecological shifts recasting known settings into spaces of transition or uncertainty. Gaby Hurtado-Ramos creates drawings, prints, zines, photographs, and multimedia works that explore the intimacies of queer social life. Their compositions, which are based on observed as well as imagined scenes, document moments of connection, including dancing figures, gathering spaces, party decorations, and communal celebrations. Hurtado-Ramos’ layered pieces reflect memory and nostalgia, while revealing moments of intimacy and transcendence. The Pernstein Women and Europe explores how noblewomen of the Pernstein family shaped the cultural identity of Early Modern Europe. Through richly detailed panels, historical narratives, and period imagery, the exhibition highlights the last generation of this influential Czech aristocratic family and their far‑reaching connections across the continent. Drawing on research by historian Pavel Marek and developed by the East Bohemian Museum in Pardubice, the exhibition reveals how these women served as cultural intermediaries—linking the Czech lands with Italy, the Pyrenees, and other European regions. Their lives illuminate the movement of ideas, fashion, foodways, and artistic traditions that helped shape Europe’s emerging cultural identity. Presented as a traveling panel exhibition, The Pernstein Women and Europe commemorates 500 years of the Renaissance in Bohemia and offers visitors a vivid look at the role of noblewomen in the formation of Europe’s shared cultural heritage. This exhibition was created by the East Bohemia Museum in Pardubice in collaboration with the University of Pardubice.
The Tyranny of Unlived Potential: A Jungian Interpretation of Puer and Puella Aeturnis (Online)

Discover the patterns and pitfalls of the Puer/Puella archetypes as they appear in myths, lived experiences, and clinical scenarios. In Jungian psychology, the puer and puella archetypes represent the “eternal boy” and “eternal girl” within the psyche. In this seminar, we will illustrate the psychological conflicts of the Puer/Puella* archetype through various examples in myths and fairy tales. These conflicts will be grounded using Jungian and Post-Jungian concepts and theories regarding the Puer Archetype. The seminar also includes a discussion of Puer and Puella representations throughout culture, lived experience, and clinical scenarios. To finalize, we will close with a group discussion in order to deepen the material with participants. This seminar will be recorded. Recordings will be distributed to registered participants. Erika is known for her dreamlike narrative landscapes, where abstraction, figuration, and imagined terrain come together through watercolor, acrylic, ink, charcoal, layered mark-making, and lyrical movement. Her work feels alive with creatures, symbols, memory, rhythm, and atmosphere. Figures appear and disappear. Landscapes shift. Lines repeat like ritual. Color moves with emotion. As a second-generation Cuban-American artist raised in Southern California and now rooted in Houston, Erika draws from the landscapes, memories, and emotional impressions of the places she has lived. JUMBO BRAIN JUMBO DRAIN (JBJD), the newest artwork by multidisciplinary artist Canda is now on view as part of the Richmond Avenue Art Trail through Redbud Arts Center. The concept behind JBJD centers on the idea that the brain is our greatest strength and, at the same time, our most delicate responsibility. We have only one brain, and sustaining it requires continuous care and balance—much like a balloon suspended within the skull. The work also reflects how closely our mental well-being is tied to our environment. Our brains respond to experience, and when our surroundings are damaged or neglected, our experiences—and in turn our inner lives—are affected as well. Caring for the environment is therefore inseparable from caring for ourselves.

“The Journey to End Cancer: From Cause to Cure” at The Health Museum

An innovative new science exhibition on cancer is coming to Houston and will explore groundbreaking research, advanced medical technologies and promising new therapies. The Journey to End Cancer: From Cause to Cure will make its national premiere at The Health Museum on March 7, 2026, and be available until September 13, 2026. Designed for both adults and children, “The Journey to End Cancer: From Cause to Cure,” is a 5,000-square-foot exhibition full of multimedia experiences, thought-provoking science interactives, dynamic animations, stunning data visualizations and inspiring first-person videos to engage and empower visitors. The exhibition is presented by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, one of the world’s most respected centers focused on cancer patient care, research, education and prevention. It was produced in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health. “Cancer affects us all, whether personally or through someone we love. But there has never been a moment like this in cancer care and research,” said Peter W.T. Pisters, M.D., president of MD Anderson. “Breakthroughs are happening at an unprecedented pace, unlocking a new understanding of the disease and powerful new therapies that will transform outcomes, both for patients and those who want to reduce their risk. This exhibition provides an incredible opportunity to educate, engage and empower people of all ages as we work together to end cancer.” The exhibition includes a chance to become a cancer detective, using cutting-edge tools to detect cancer in different parts of the body. Visitors also can play an engaging, interactive game that reveals how seemingly simple, everyday choices can help reduce cancer risk. In other interactive experiences, visitors can supercharge the superheroes of the immune system to stop rogue cancer cells. Exhibit-goers also can enter an immersive media experience to view a microscopic universe inside their bodies and explore ideas for future cancer detection, from liquid biopsies to cancer-sniffing dogs. Throughout the experience, visitors will hear stories from survivors and clinicians who reveal the personal challenges they go through each day, providing a unique window into the emotional realities of facing cancer. If visitors need a moment of calm, they can visit a soothing sound and light experience that spotlights the role of therapies like meditation and yoga in cancer care. This exhibition features a selection of some thirty works from a gift to the museum by the Cy Twombly Foundation. The Menil Collection presents “John Akomfrah: The Hour Of The Dog”, an immersive, six-channel video and sound installation by the Ghanaian-born British artist Sir John Akomfrah (b. 1957). The work, co-commissioned by the Menil and the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA), explores the history of youth-led Civil Rights–era activism in the American South from 1954 to 1963. The 51-minute work is best experienced in its entirety, and will be on view at the Menil through October 11, 2026.

Drawing on research by historian Pavel Marek and developed by the East Bohemian Museum in Pardubice, the exhibition reveals how these women served as cultural intermediaries—linking the Czech lands with Italy, the Pyrenees, and other European regions. Their lives illuminate the movement of ideas, fashion, foodways, and artistic traditions that helped shape Europe’s emerging cultural identity. Presented as a traveling panel exhibition, The Pernstein Women and Europe commemorates 500 years of the Renaissance in Bohemia and offers visitors a vivid look at the role of noblewomen in the formation of Europe’s shared cultural heritage. JUMBO BRAIN JUMBO DRAIN (JBJD), the newest artwork by multidisciplinary artist Canda is now on view as part of the Richmond Avenue Art Trail through Redbud Arts Center. The concept behind JBJD centers on the idea that the brain is our greatest strength and, at the same time, our most delicate responsibility. We have only one brain, and sustaining it requires continuous care and balance—much like a balloon suspended within the skull. The work also reflects how closely our mental well-being is tied to our environment. Our brains respond to experience, and when our surroundings are damaged or neglected, our experiences—and in turn our inner lives—are affected as well. Caring for the environment is therefore inseparable from caring for ourselves.

Handmade paper as art and craft is little known. Even though paper has been around for 2,000 years, contemporary hand papermakers work in relative obscurity, often unknown, except to other papermakers. To show the beauty and diversity of papermaking, eight papermakers were paired with fifteen printmakers to feature original prints made on handmade paper. A call was put out to hand papermakers around the country and papers were sent from North Carolina, Minnesota, Maryland, Vermont, New Mexico, New Hampshire and Texas. In all, eight artisans provided enough paper for fifteen PrintHouston printmakers from Kansas, Colorado, New York, and Texas to participate in this exhibition. His exhibition Homeland and Roads features scenes of Kazakhstan, travel-inspired works, and paintings reflecting his love of tennis. His works are held in private collections in the United States. Each filmmaking camp focuses on a different genre: Historical, Changemakers, Documentary, and Narrative Fiction, allowing aspiring filmmakers to explore the art of cinema from multiple perspectives while developing their own voice. Narrative Fiction Filmmaking Camp | Ages 9 – 13 | 9 am – 3 pm July 13-17 at St. Paul’s School Young storytellers unleash their wildest creative visions in this story-driven filmmaking camp. Whether their movie is set in outer space or under the sea, campers have full artistic license to bring their unique ideas to the screen. Together, they will write, film, direct, and act in an original production, using the “Hero’s Journey” as a roadmap to learn the essentials of storytelling. Camp Leaders for the Time-Traveling Historical Camp are Dan Gordon and Bri Guerrero. Dan Gordon leads the Changemakers and Documentary Camps, and Bri Guerrero leads the Narrative Fiction Camp. Special Exhibition: “ATACAMA (photography)” – Renewable Energy and Mining in Chile’s Atacama Desert

ATACAMA is a seminal exhibition, by photographer Jamey Stillings, which explores the evolving nexus between renewable energy and mining in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Stillings’ interest in the human-altered landscape and his environmental concerns are principal pillars of his work. This exhibit’s subject matter is far from Houston, but ATACAMA’s relevance certainly hits close to home. As the global leader in copper production and the second-largest producer of lithium, Chile’s environmental practices are directly tied to our daily lives.

Becoming to Empowering: 400 Years of STEM – Traveling Exhibit

The Journey C-STEM was awarded two grants from the 400 Years of African American History Commission to develop an art exhibit as part of a national cohort dedicated to planning, developing, and implementing programs celebrating African American history and contributions. Additional funding was provided by the Houston Arts Alliance and Education Consulting Services, LLC, further supporting the creation and expansion of the exhibit. The artwork featured in this exhibit is inspired by the creativity and ingenuity of students in PreK-12 who have participated in C-STEM programming. Utilizing leftover materials from more than two decades of hands-on STEM education, these materials have been repurposed to create a compelling and immersive artistic experience that reflects the transformative power of STEM and the arts. The exhibit will open May 2, 2026, at the African American Research Center at the Gregory Campus, one of two Houston Public Library research libraries.

Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, first published in 1865, Finding Alice: Artists Exploring Wonderland featuring Abelardo Morell explores the enduring influence of the classic story on artists across generations through photography, illustration, and book arts. Finding Alice: Artists Exploring Wonderland featuring Abelardo Morell features works from two photographic series by the acclaimed artist Abelardo Morell, alongside multiple illustrated editions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The exhibition includes work by Andrea D’Aquino, Salvador Dalí, Camille Rose Garcia, Yayoi Kusama, Oleg Lipchenko, Peter Newell, Evgeny Alexandrovich Shukaev, among others. Of his initial Alice in Wonderland series, Morell says, “I designed my images to be situated within a landscape made of books because it struck me that [Lewis] Carroll had linked Wonderland to the idea of discovering imagination by digging deep into the pages of a book. At this time my daughter, Laura, was seven years old and these pictures felt in part to be tributes to her, who like Alice, was an equally brave girl in my life.” During the COVID-19 pandemic, Morell began a second body of work, Through the Looking Glass, shaped by the experience of sheltering in place. Morell found parallels between Carroll’s story and the uncertainties of contemporary life. Morell says, “Alice’s rolling with the punches supplied me with an instructive guide to living in turbulent times. Brave Alice learns to deal with the irrational without ignoring it. She makes her own sense out of nonsense.” About the Artist Abelardo Morell and his family fled Cuba in 1962 and settled in New York City. He is widely recognized for his camera obscura photographs created in locations around the world. His major retrospectives include Abelardo Morell and the Camera Eye at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Abelardo Morell: The Universe Next Door at the Art Institute of Chicago, which later traveled to the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Morell has received numerous honors, including fellowships from the CINTAS Foundation and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the International Center of Photography’s Infinity Award, and a Lucie Award for Achievement in Fine Art. His work is held in major public and private collections worldwide. He lives and works in Boston and is exclusively represented by the Edwynn Houk Gallery, New York.

SPECIAL EXHIBITION: The Pernstein Women and Europe

The Pernstein Women and Europe explores how noblewomen of the Pernstein family shaped the cultural identity of Early Modern Europe. Through richly detailed panels, historical narratives, and period imagery, the exhibition highlights the last generation of this influential Czech aristocratic family and their far‑reaching connections across the continent. Drawing on research by historian Pavel Marek and developed by the East Bohemian Museum in Pardubice, the exhibition reveals how these women served as cultural intermediaries—linking the Czech lands with Italy, the Pyrenees, and other European regions. Their lives illuminate the movement of ideas, fashion, foodways, and artistic traditions that helped shape Europe’s emerging cultural identity. Presented as a traveling panel exhibition, The Pernstein Women and Europe commemorates 500 years of the Renaissance in Bohemia and offers visitors a vivid look at the role of noblewomen in the formation of Europe’s shared cultural heritage. This exhibition was created by the East Bohemia Museum in Pardubice in collaboration with the University of Pardubice.
