This exhibition brings together new work by four artists who undertook residencies in cities far from home. Two artists from Marseille, France–Yohanne Lamoulère and Geoffroy Mathieu–traveled to Atlanta, while two Atlanta-based artists–Nydia Blas and Joshua Dudley Greer–spent time in Marseille. While abroad, each artist used photography as a tool for navigation, encounter, and reflection. Atlanta and Marseille are both important southern capitals. Though environmentally and historically distinct–Marseille as a port city on the Mediterranean with origins dating back to ancient Greece circa 600 BCE, and Atlanta a landlocked city founded as a railroad terminus in 1837–both share a deep sense of place, history, and self-definition that have influenced their national culture. In Atlanta, Lamoulère embedded herself within high school and college marching bands, making compelling portraits and photographing practices and performances that reveal the discipline, pride, and sense of community built by the students. Mathieu approached the car-dependent city as a pedestrian, documenting improvised paths and meeting people who navigate a landscape not prioritized for walking. In Marseille without French fluency, Blas and Greer worked with introspective and observational approaches. Blas connected with teenagers working at Friche la Belle de Mai, an arts and cultural center, creating thoughtful, collaborative portraits, while also assembling altarpieces from found objects. Greer explored Marseille’s layered landscapes and terrains, capturing moments and places where past, present, and future converge as everyday life in the city unfolds. The four artists offer their individual perspectives of both cities, revealing unexpected parallels and resonances that allow both locals and visitors to see facets of these places anew, and fostering a transatlantic dialogue that bridges the two cities.

The Emory Cinematheque Presents: Clockers October 14 at 7:30 p.m. in White Hall 208 1995 | Run Time: 128 min. | DCP Directed by Spike Lee Introduced by Dr. Paula Massood (Brooklyn College CUNY) Clockers opens as the first film Spike Lee directed that he did not actually write. Adapted from Richard Price’s book Clockers, Lee taps cinematographer Malik Hassan Sayeed to re-imagine Black urban life set in the cross hairs of nonsensical violence. Using grainy film stock and differentiating dolly shots, Lee focuses on a group beyond the Black middle class. The film feels reminiscent to his 1983 thesis film, Joe’s Bedstuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads but with a 1990s sensibility and ownership. Clockers emerged at the beginning of what has been described as both a renaissance of Black filmmaking and a new Black exploitation period. This period was kicked off in 1991 with the releases of New Jack City and Boyz in the Hood. The success of these films encouraged Hollywood to produce several narratives of Black, urban, and poor communities with violence as the central figure. Clockers aims to counter this wave. In her book, Black City Cinema, film professor Paula J. Massood talks about how this film “self-consciously examine[s] hood film conventions to explore the history of black migration.” She argues elsewhere, “Lee constructs a version of the contemporary African American city that concurrently acknowledges its history of migrations while avoiding the nihilism of many contemporary hood films set in similar locations. In the process he expands the boundaries of current African American cinema...” Clockers introduces actor Mekhi Phifer and stars Harvey Keitel, John Tuturro, and Delroy Lindo. Dr. Paula J. Massood, Dean of the School of Visual, Media and Performing Arts at Brooklyn College, will introduce the film and lead the Q & A afterwards.

Candler’s Black Church Studies program welcomes all to attend the 2026 Howard Thurman Lecture, presented by Jason E. Shelton, professor of sociology and director of the Center for African American Studies at the University of Texas at Arlington. Register to attend in person or online below. “The Black Church Now—What’s Changing and Why It Matters” For several decades, African Americans have continued to depart from organized religion. As a result, some of the historic denominations comprising the Black Church now stand at the crossroads. In this public lecture, Dr. Shelton will explain why some traditions have lost followers while others have gained, as well as explore political and social consequences of these faith-based changes, and whether anything can be done to bring people back to organized religion. Dr. Shelton’s arguments regarding the future of the Black Church rest on both quantitative and qualitative data analyses, as well as classical and contemporary theorists.

This exhibition brings together new work by four artists who undertook residencies in cities far from home. Two artists from Marseille, France–Yohanne Lamoulère and Geoffroy Mathieu–traveled to Atlanta, while two Atlanta-based artists–Nydia Blas and Joshua Dudley Greer–spent time in Marseille. While abroad, each artist used photography as a tool for navigation, encounter, and reflection. Atlanta and Marseille are both important southern capitals. Though environmentally and historically distinct–Marseille as a port city on the Mediterranean with origins dating back to ancient Greece circa 600 BCE, and Atlanta a landlocked city founded as a railroad terminus in 1837–both share a deep sense of place, history, and self-definition that have influenced their national culture. In Atlanta, Lamoulère embedded herself within high school and college marching bands, making compelling portraits and photographing practices and performances that reveal the discipline, pride, and sense of community built by the students. Mathieu approached the car-dependent city as a pedestrian, documenting improvised paths and meeting people who navigate a landscape not prioritized for walking. In Marseille without French fluency, Blas and Greer worked with introspective and observational approaches. Blas connected with teenagers working at Friche la Belle de Mai, an arts and cultural center, creating thoughtful, collaborative portraits, while also assembling altarpieces from found objects. Greer explored Marseille’s layered landscapes and terrains, capturing moments and places where past, present, and future converge as everyday life in the city unfolds. The four artists offer their individual perspectives of both cities, revealing unexpected parallels and resonances that allow both locals and visitors to see facets of these places anew, and fostering a transatlantic dialogue that bridges the two cities.

How can faculty ensure mutual benefit to students and partners when engaging students in learning experiences with external partners? What program structures help sustain partner relationships and cultivate transformative experiences for students? The undergraduate Community Building and Social Change program (directed by Dr. Michal Rich) and the Ethics and Servant Leadership program (directed by Dr. Edward Queen), and the School of Medicine’s Community Learning and Social Change program (directed by Dr. Maura George) are long-running Emory programs that sustainably match students with external partners to deepen student learning. This workshop will feature presentations about the structure of each of these highly regarded programs, along with opportunities to connect with their directors in small group discussions, and is suitable for anyone considering beginning or re- imagining a community-engaged learning experience in their classroom. Emerging research suggests that up to 20% of the population is neurodiverse. In this training, employees are introduced to the topic of neurodiversity and discuss strategies to understand, embrace, and uplift the unique strengths and experiences of neurodiverse people. Informed by the experiences of neurodiverse employees at Emory University, this training also offers participants insights on the role of all employees in creating an inclusive workplace for neurodivergent and neurotypical employees.
Through a weekly gathering of farms, restaurants, small-scale artisanal businesses, and Emory community members, the Emory Farmers Market fosters education and personal relationships through food. Community members have the opportunity to engage with small-scale producers and support the local economy, contributing to a more robust and sustainable food system, while enjoying delicious, local food. Join Emory Art History on Tuesday October 20 at 6PM in Ackerman Hall, at the Carlos Museum, for Heath Lecture: “Good Housing” Ana Luísa Soares Founding Partner of fala atelier Good housing is not the optimization of a known answer, but the suspicion that the question itself remains unresolved. It treats architecture not as the production of repetition, but as the possibility of manufacturing freedom within constraint. Budgets, regulations, typologies, and ordinary construction systems cease to be limitations and become design material, capable of supporting alternative forms of collective life. Rather than prescribing how life should unfold, it accommodates unpredictability, negotiation, contradiction, and surprise. It is neither luxury nor spectacle, but a form of collective generosity achieved through an economy of means. Good housing is not a classification, a standard, or a typology. It is a horizon. The persistent belief that, even under the most ordinary conditions, architecture can still expand the possibilities of living. fala is an architecture practice. Founded without a defined plan, the atelier operates through a continuous production where ideas, projects, and choreography coexist within the same conceptual plane. For over a decade, the practice has expanded its wit while deliberately remaining a small local structure, continuously negotiating between an immaterial international recognition and the tangible fragility of everyday practice. The atelier’s work often emerges from ordinary constraints: limited budgets, dry regulations, suburban desires, and mischievous expectations, while simultaneously aiming for a parallel grand discourse through drawings, spaces, photographs, and writing. Within fala, architecture progressively shifts away from service and towards fiction: built work coexists with its representations, and frequently the latter outlives and redefines the former. Between Porto, Lausanne, or Tokyo, the practice continues to cultivate a methodical optimism, insisting on architecture’s capacity to construct culture through autonomous narratives embedded within pragmatic realities.

2026–2027 Emory Dance Free, No Tickets Required Join us for a conversation with Alpert Award winning choreographer and performer Jeanine Durning, along with the dancers Miguel Alejandro Castille, Sarah Konner, and Erin Kouwe, whose work, The Play, will be presented by the Dance Program October 23-24. Durning and the dancers will discuss “nonstopping,” her revolutionary improvisational system utilized in The Play. They will also discuss how this performance project shifts the dance company paradigm away from a top-down model with choreographers hiring dancers to a system in which the dancers have agency as initiators and collaborators. En Route: Views from Atlanta and Marseille On view: September 17- November 1, 2026 Emory Visual Arts Gallery 700 Peavine Creek Dr. Atlanta, GA 30322 Gallery Hours: Monday-Friday 9am-5pm Artists Reception: October 17, 2:30-5:30pm Location: 700 Peavine Creek Dr. Atlanta, GA 30322 How can photography help us to see and understand a place that is unfamiliar? This exhibition brings together new work by four artists who undertook residencies in cities far from home. Two artists from Marseille, France–Yohanne Lamoulère and Geoffroy Mathieu–traveled to Atlanta, while two Atlanta-based artists–Nydia Blas and Joshua Dudley Greer–spent time in Marseille. While abroad, each artist used photography as a tool for navigation, encounter, and reflection. Atlanta and Marseille are both important southern capitals. Though environmentally and historically distinct–Marseille as a port city on the Mediterranean with origins dating back to ancient Greece circa 600 BCE, and Atlanta a landlocked city founded as a railroad terminus in 1837–both share a deep sense of place, history, and self-definition that have influenced their national culture. In Atlanta, Lamoulère embedded herself within high school and college marching bands, making compelling portraits and photographing practices and performances that reveal the discipline, pride, and sense of community built by the students. Mathieu approached the car-dependent city as a pedestrian, documenting improvised paths and meeting people who navigate a landscape not prioritized for walking. In Marseille without French fluency, Blas and Greer worked with introspective and observational approaches. Blas connected with teenagers working at Friche la Belle de Mai, an arts and cultural center, creating thoughtful, collaborative portraits, while also assembling altarpieces from found objects. Greer explored Marseille’s layered landscapes and terrains, capturing moments and places where past, present, and future converge as everyday life in the city unfolds. The four artists offer their individual perspectives of both cities, revealing unexpected parallels and resonances that allow both locals and visitors to see facets of these places anew, and fostering a transatlantic dialogue that bridges the two cities.

This workshop will introduce Dewey Data, a platform that provides Emory users with access to commercial datasets that would otherwise be costly to obtain. Participants will learn how to navigate Dewey’s data catalog, identify datasets relevant to their research, access and download data, and develop efficient workflows for working with large files. We will discuss potential research applications and provide code examples in both Python and R. Participants who wish to follow along with the examples should have either Python or R installed and access to an active Emory account. No prior experience with Dewey is required; basic familiarity with either Python or R will be helpful but is not necessary.

“The Melting Sublime” by Professor Matthew Birkhold on Wednesday, October 21, at 4pm (with reception following). This talk explores the entanglement of law, culture, and aesthetics in the polar regions. By tracing shifting representations of icebergs from the eighteenth century to contemporary Indigenous art, this project develops the concept of “the melting sublime” to reimagine aesthetic value in environmental law of the Anthropocene. Matthew Birkhold, B.A. (Columbia, 2008), J.D. (Columbia, 2016), Ph.D. (Princeton, 2016), currently Professor of German & Director of Graduate Studies, Affiliated Faculty, Moritz College of Law, and Faculty Director, Environmental Humanities, is a scholar of law, culture, and the humanities, with an emphasis on German literature from 1750-1945, environmental humanities, intellectual property, and Indigenous studies.

Join Ruth Allen, curator of Greek and Roman art, and Annie Shanley, associate registrar and provenance researcher, for a discussion about the journey of six fragments of a Laconian black-figure drinking cup, dated 560 BCE and three Fanta cans. Allen and Shanley will share a story of research and the international collaborative efforts that identified illegal excavation and antiquities trafficking and the eventual reunification and return of the fragments to Italy. The Emory Cinematheque Presents: Girl 6 October 21 at 7:30 p.m. in White Hall 208 1996 | Run Time: 108 min | 35mm Directed by Spike Lee Introduced by Dr. Stephane Dunn (Morehouse College) Print provided by Yale Film Archive. Girl 6 is Spike Lee’s eighth commercial film and the third where he centers a woman as the main protagonist. Made in 1996, it is based on a play by African-American playwright Suzan-Lori Parks. It examines the phone sex business (as a parody of Hollywood) and one Black woman’s dreams against her negotiation of that industry. Essence gushes about Theresa Randle who stars as girl 6 saying, “Randle possesses the chameleonlike ability to be every woman you've ever known and one you've never met before.” Even cultural critic bell hooks, known for getting in Lee’s a** about his work, says: “I find Girl 6 to be a movie that not only challenges Hollywood but is a critical read on Hollywood.” In a surrealist tone, the film attempts to deconstruct the lucrative but under-explored entertainment world of phone sex. Beautifully shot by DP Malik Hassan Sayeed, the film visually paints a psychology of the phone sex industry from the perspective of its beautiful workers. Prince writes and produces the entire soundtrack, making the “combination of the film's seductive content and old school Prince tunes, long known to have maintained a kinky edge… a perfect match” (Call & Post). Beyond Randle as ‘Judy’ (Girl 6), the film stars Isaiah Washington, Jenifer Lewis, Debi Mezar, and Spike himself along with cameo appearances by filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, actors Ron Silver and Halle Berry, model Naomi Campbell, and singer Madonna. Film scholar and maker Dr. Stephane Dunn, Morehouse College chair of the Cinema, Television, and Emerging Media Studies Department and author of Baad Bitches & Sassy Supermamas, will introduce the film and lead the Q & A.

Candler’s Women, Theology, and Ministry program welcomes all to the WTM Women’s Forum featuring Dianne Stewart, Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Religion and African American Studies at Emory University. Womanism is a transatlantic phenomenon with understudied legacies in the Afro-Caribbean, especially among spiritual communities beyond the Christian tradition. This lecture revisits longstanding womanist approaches to spirituality, theology, and ministry to explore legacies of Afro-Caribbean womanism among custodians of two African heritage religions: Trinidadian Yoruba-Orisa and Jamaican Kumina. It underscores the influential roles that spiritual mothers and daughters have played in the preservation and defense of their religious communities and the impact of their ministries on changing perception of African heritage religions in the public life and cultures of Caribbean societies.
