Smooth World: Free Screening and Conversation with Filmmaker Mickey Duzyj Thursday, September 10 at 4pm in White Hall 205 The Emory Department of Film and Media invites you to our free screening of Mickey Duzyj's new documentary, Smooth World. Following the screening, Mickey Duzyj will join Dr. Gregory Zinman in a conversation about the film. Film Synopsis: Decades past its prime, the terminally-uncool genre of Smooth Jazz endures as an underground music scene for senior citizens. Clad in sequins and bathing in the sweet sound of saxophone, its fans enjoy a joyous, diverse, and hidden paradise. But all’s not well. With leader Dave Koz incapacitated by a tortured relationship to the word “smooth”, the clock is ticking for the movement’s next leader— one who will attract young fans to ensure that the Smooth World lives forever. Mickey Duzyj Bio: With work called “genius” by The Guardian and “invigorating” by The New Yorker, Sundance-premiering artist/director Mickey Duzyj is known for his refreshingly offbeat approach to documentaries, all of which feature his distinctive animation. He is the creator/director of the Netflix Original documentary series LOSERS—celebrating hidden victories within the sports world’s most epic failures—earning him multiple Emmy nominations and a place on Variety Magazine’s “Top 10 Documentary Filmmakers to Watch” list. Duzyj has contributed illustration and animation work to documentaries including You Don’t Know Bo (ESPN 30 for 30, about Bo Jackson) and Ezra Edelman’s Academy Award-winning OJ: Made in America. He also remains one of the most in-demand sports illustrators in the world, with clients including Rolling Stone, Nike, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Vice, and ESPN.

The Emory University Department of Classics and Carlos Museum are pleased to welcome Ann Kuttner, associate professor in History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania for the 15th annual Benario Lecture titled “Where Is It Growing: Winding Vines and World-Making on The Ara Pacis.” The Benario Lecture in Roman Studies was established through a generous donation from Herbert W. Benario, longtime professor of Classics at Emory University and author of numerous books on Roman authors.

Using the Greenwood Rising Museum’s interpretation of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre as a case study, she explores how public history and collective memory influence support for racial reconciliation, deepen awareness of systemic racism, and inspire civic engagement.

This conversation explores the ethical foundations of voting and political inclusion. Rather than focusing on current controversies or partisan debates over (Georgia’s) election law, we hope to step back and examine the enduring questions that underlie democratic participation. Among the questions we may consider are: When it comes to voting, whose voices matter? What responsibilities accompany the right to vote? How should we think about representation, civic belonging, and the moral purposes of enfranchisement in a pluralistic society? Our goal is to illuminate the principles that have shaped, and continue to shape, America's democratic experiment.

Candler’s La Mesa Academy for Theological Studies and Office of Methodist Studies will host members of the cast and creative team from the new feature film "Brotherhood: A Cinematic Musical" on Monday, September 14 from 7:00–9:00 p.m. EDT in Cannon Chapel. The event will highlight a mix of storytelling, live music, segments from the film, and guided conversations that explore themes of identity, empathy, and seeing our neighbors with new eyes. Brotherhood‘s writer/director Ross Boothe, lead actors Mauricio Martínez and Casey Elliott, and consulting producer/cultural advisor Liliana Bolaños will take part. The event is part of the film's nationwide Love Your Neighbor tour. Brotherhood is a musical feature film from writer-director Ross Boothe that follows the story of two neighbors: Jon is a lifelong US citizen; Fabián, is a Mexican immigrant who has been waiting more than a decade for progress on his US asylum application. Universal themes and theatrical traditions that trace their origins to ancient amphitheaters continue to shape modern Western media. Join David van Schoor, assistant professor of Classics, and Park Krausen, actor and director, for a salon that explores theater in ancient Greek and Roman society. Krausen and van Schoor will lead a conversation centering on their recent collaboration adapting a Greek drama for American audiences, touching on topics from ancient playwrights and actors, to their audiences, from how the theater functioned socially and politically, to how the ancient themes and traditions continue to resonate today. The Emory Cinematheque Presents: Do the Right Thing September 16 at 7:30 p.m. in White Hall 208 1989 | Run Time: 120 min | DCP Directed by Spike Lee Introduced by Dr. Miriam Petty (Northwestern University) Do the Right Thing is one of Spike Lee’s most powerful films and addresses the lasting impact of racist ideology on African-American and larger U.S. communities, especially within communities where many people must live together. Lee battled with Paramount over the budget and script—issues that were not resolved. He finally ended up getting a deal with Universal Studios along with final cut approval—something he felt committed to having based on the marketing fiasco with School Daze. Do the Right Thing is Lee’s first union film—meaning, the first time he would use a union crew. With some wrangling, he secured a number of African-Americans into the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union, most who had been formerly excluded. Do the Right Thing, in many people’s minds, is the film that launched Lee into the company of great American filmmakers, as opposed to regulated to just African-American filmmakers. For 1989, it was the year’s most controversial film and received an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay but not Best Picture. The slight Lee received by the Motion Picture Academy still reverberates in critical discussions of the film award industry. Beyond the heft of the film itself, film scholar William Grant talks about the economic/production struggles Lee encountered to get it made. Grant writes: “The merchandising of DTRT, as with Lee’s two earlier films, was to be handled by his production company, Forty Acres and a Mule Filmworks. There had been companion volumes to the earlier films…and widespread marketing via T-shirts, sound tracks, buttons, letter jackets, and baseball caps. Lee’s comment, ‘Somebody wearing your T-shirt is a walking billboard…’.” The film stars Samuel L. Jackson, John Tuturro, Spike Lee, and introduces Rosie Perez. Do the Right Thing will be introduced by film scholar Dr. Miriam Petty of Northwestern University who appears as part of the inaugural Evalene Parsons Jackson Speakers series.

Register for the opening A remarkable collection of treasures—from a 4,000-year-old cuneiform tablet and ancient scrolls to a handmade 1804 prayer book—lies at the heart of Emory's rich history of Jewish scholarship. Now, these fascinating artifacts are on display in a new exhibition at Emory’s Robert W. Woodruff Library that celebrates 50 years of Jewish studies at Emory University. The opening event on Sept. 17 will feature a welcome by Valeda F. Dent, vice provost of Libraries, Museum, and the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship, and an introduction by Ellie R. Schainker, Judith London Evans Director of the Tam Institute for Jewish Studies and director of undergraduate studies in the Department of History. Exhibition curators will give opening remarks, followed by time for guests to explore the exhibition. Co-curators are Katalin Rac, the Jewish studies librarian who joined Emory Libraries in May 2023, and Eric Goldstein, associate professor of history and Jewish studies at Emory University, who also directed the Tam Institute for Jewish Studies for over a decade and has authored two books about Jewish life and history. Through three connected gallery spaces, the exhibition traces knowledge creation from historical preservation to active research, interpretation, and teaching. Atlanta-based artist Sergio Suárez explores the passage and presence of time through print, sculpture, and ceramics, in conversation with the Carlos Museum’s permanent collection in the exhibition Anamnesis. Join Ruth Allen, curator of Greek and Roman Art, and Andi McKenzie, curator of Works on Paper, for a lively discussion with Suárez. Together they will explore his construction of a new mythos rooted in ancient Mesoamerican and ancient Greek cosmologies and material culture and discuss connections to philosophy, astrophysics, the history and practice of printmaking, and colonial legacies of Catholicism. How do communities, especially queer communities, preserve their histories for future generations? Panelists will consider the vital role of queer and community archives in preserving histories, identities, and lived experiences that have often been overlooked or excluded from traditional institutions. The conversation will examine the ethical and practical challenges of collecting, preserving, and providing access to community-created materials while centering the voices of those represented. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn about how to collect and share the stories, experiences, and memories of their own communities.
Attention Studies: Configuring a New 'Interdisciplinary Discipline' Distraction is experienced as one of the key challenges of our time. Digital distractions have been blamed for everything up to and including the destruction of democracy. How can universities rise to the challenge of providing a research base for exploring the concept of attention? Every discipline studies attention in some form or another. Psychology, neurobiology and psychiatry study systems of attention within the brain and the person. Social science, and humanities disciplines study the politics, sociologies and cultural workings of attention. The arts explore how different art forms manipulate attention differently and for different ends. All of these disciplines use radically different methodologies in their exploration of attention and all explore different facets of the same attention system. So, what happens if we try to bring all of this together to articulate a new 'interdisciplinary discipline' of Attention Studies, capable of addressing key challenges from a deep and united research base? That's the aim of a new project I'm developing with Oxford University press: one which brings together innovative publishing methods with a new approach to working across disciplines. This talk outlines the project, working through some of the decisions involved and exploring how new ways of interdisciplinary working and publishing are essential for enabling us to make a step change in response to some of the most pressing problems we are experiencing. This lecture explores the relationship between Wesleyan Vile-tality—the courageous willingness to go wherever God calls for the sake of the gospel—and the Wesleyan Practical Quadrilateral, a framework that emphasizes field preaching, micro-communities, social engagement, and leadership activation as the enduring practices of Methodist renewal. Drawing from the lives of John Wesley and generations of Methodist witnesses, participants will discover how these complementary concepts offer a practical roadmap for revitalizing the church in the twenty-first century. Rather than preserving Methodism as a historical tradition, this session invites the church to reclaim it as a living movement.

Emory Cinematheque Presents: Jungle Fever September 23 at 7:30 p.m. in White Hall 208 1991 | Run Time: 132 min. | DCP Directed by Spike Lee Introduced by Dr. Mikal Gaines (Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences) Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever explores interracial coupling (specifically the black-white version of it), the devastation of drug use in Black communities, class status both within and outside of race, and gender roles. The film opens with a tribute to Yusef Hawkins, a young Black teen murdered in 1989. On August 23, 1989, 16-year-old Hawkins went to look for a used car in the Bensonhurst area of Brooklyn, New York with three of his friends. A mob of about 30 youths approached them, most of them carrying bats. However, one was carrying a gun. This mob of mostly white Italian-Americans were angry because one of their girlfriends invited a Black boy to her eighteenth birthday party. Thinking Hawkins and his friends were there for the party, they beat them with bats and shot Hawkins dead. This real-lived tension undergirds the film. In praise of Jungle Fever, film critic Alan Bell writes: “Ernest Dickerson’s photography is his best yet” (Los Angeles Sentinel). Film scholar Ed Guerrero argues that “Lee’s inclination for depicting the erotic has produced perhaps the most frank, seductive rendering of interracial, black-on-white sex on the Hollywood screen to date.” While others, like scholar William Lyne, suggest that Jungle Fever is an excellent example of a film that has been “portrayed as transgressive but end[s] up only reinforcing mainstream values.” Jungle Fever stars Spike Lee, Wesley Snipes, Annabella Sciorra, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, John Tuturro, and introduces Halle Berry in her debut feature film role. Jungle Fever will be introduced by film scholar Dr. Mikail Gaines of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences-Boston, and he will lead the Q & A.

Second day of a two-day course open to Emory University faculty and staff. When people find themselves stuck, there are crucial conversations keeping them there, conversations they are not holding or not holding well. Learn how to spot the conversations that are keeping you stuck, understand your role in the problem, learn how to establish safety when a conversation turns crucial, and obtain tools that will help you hold the right conversations at the right time. Learning Objectives: Effectively hold the right conversation to get the right results. Identify when safety is at risk and you are no longer in dialogue. Learn skills that will help you set up conditions to talk about almost anything. Understand different types of decision-making strategies and how to move toward action and results.

We will use Blender to create a series of simple objects, including pasta shapes and basic furniture, while learning essential techniques for working with meshes, curves, modifiers, and transforms. No prior Blender experience is needed.
