A story from the life of baseball legend Dock Ellis In a new play by Andrew Sanford Directed by Jennifer Sandella Dock Ellis was a larger-than-life baseball player whose career spanned the 1970s. When a manager on the Texas Rangers insisted that players on the team no longer drink at hotel bars while on the road, Dock fought it tooth and nail. This fictional retelling of Dock’s struggle finds him confronting then-Rangers owner Brad Corbett over the rule, demanding it be dropped. Corbett agrees on one condition: Dock tells him the true story of his legendary no-hitter, which was not public at the time. What follows is a tense and hilarious exchange that tackles race, representation, alcoholism, and that fateful story that would go on to define Dock’s life and career (whether he wanted it to or not). Glide along the water this summer and fall with free public kayaking! Presented in partnership with Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse, free kayaking is offered throughout the summer on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, Saturdays, and Sunday afternoons. All levels are welcome including first-time kayakers — life vests and all equipment provided, as well as instruction. Children under 18 must have an adult guardian present. Meet at the north entrance of Pier 2, look for the floating dock. Advanced registration highly recommended, providing 20 minute timed slots. This standout creative nonfiction debut explores the lives and histories of plants considered nonnative or invasive as metaphors for the Black experience in America. In Tending the Vines, Ashia S. Ajani illuminates how eight unique plants tell the story of the Black diaspora in America. Each chapter is a deep dive into one plant—including eucalyptus, passionflower, wild mustard, and kudzu—exploring their significance in African tradition, their role through the Middle Passage and Chattel Slavery, and their enduring importance in modern households and communities. Tending the Vines unpacks the complex rhetorical lives of these plants, most of which have been used as both ugly metaphors for Black incursion as well as powerful symbols for Black liberation. It also highlights the ethnobotanical uses that have sustained displaced populations for centuries. Throughout, Ajani complicates our notions of “invasive” and belonging, by contextualizing how plants move, are moved, and, of course, move us.

Inspired by Arthur Schnitzler’s La Ronde, THE CIRCUIT reimagines the classic cycle of intimate encounters as a pulse-driven, fully immersive silent disco ballet. Produced by New York Theatre Company, this bold new work fuses dance, theatre, and nightlife into a visceral experience that is intimate, fluid, and unapologetically provocative. Upon arrival, audience members receive wireless headphones. Through them, the entire world of the show unfolds — a fully realised play and an original EDM score transmitted directly into your ears. You hear whispered dialogue, internal monologues, ambient sound, and a live-mixed soundscape with cinematic clarity. Nothing is projected outward. No voices fill the room. Every confession, every breath, every thought feels as though it’s meant for you alone. And yet, what you see is something entirely different. While you are hearing a play and an original score, you are watching dance unfold in real time — on the streets of DUMBO. As you follow characters from site to site outdoors, choreography erupts against the backdrop of cobblestone streets, alleyways, storefronts, and the Manhattan Bridge skyline. Language lives in your headphones; physicality lives in the city around you. The result is a thrilling dual experience: an intimate narrative in your ears and a visceral ballet unfolding live in the open air. There is no traditional stage. No fixed seat. You move with the performers through the neighbourhood, tracing a looping chain of desire and consequence — seduction, power, vulnerability, violence, longing, and collapse. Each audience member curates their own journey, shaped by who they follow, where they linger, and which moments they choose to witness. The experience is both collective and deeply personal. Though everyone inhabits the same world, no two paths are identical. The constant electronic pulse creates an emotional throughline, transforming even stillness into something electric and cinematic. Co-directed by Josh Zacher and John Kroft, choreographed by Josh Zacher, written by Connor Wentworth, and with an original score and sound design by Jacob Ryan Smith, with associate sound design by Anna Tobin, THE CIRCUIT dissolves the boundary between spectator and participant. This is not just a performance — it’s a charged, sensory loop of sex, rhythm, and reckoning set against the heartbeat of Brooklyn itself.
