The Artist's Studio at the Library is proud to present the next series from the Art Institute of Chicago. Families can attend any session to create mixed media art with their children. This session focuses on artists Mary Cassatt, Margaret Burroughs, Romare Bearden, Suzuki Harunobu and Jacob Lawrence. Once you have your inspiration, kids will draw a picture on watercolor paper and then fill in using markers, colored pencils, paint brushes and water, patterned paper and more to create artwork inspired by one of the provided examples or your own. During these interactive workshop, participants will explore the fundamentals of robotics, engineering and computer programming using a LEGO Education SPIKE Prime robotics kit. Join other aspiring authors this fall for Write at CPL, a series of workshops presented by our partners at Story Studio. This workshop will focus on Going Deep on Point of View and is led by Serena Simpson. Point of View (POV) is the position/lens from which the narrative is told. POV is one of the most essential building blocks of narrative. It determines all the other possibilities for sharing a narrative with the reader. POV heavily influences structure at both the micro and macro levels. Together, we will explore how access shifts the story and what happens when POV changes mid-scene. Serena Simpson is a writer from Chicago, IL. She has published essays in Barrelhouse and Ninth Letter. Her work frequently explores memory, place, and their overlap, interstices, and interplay. Serena won the Guild Complex’s 2018 Leon Forest Prose Award for nonfiction, was named a 2019 Tin House Scholar, awarded the 2020 Disquiet Prize for nonfiction, and selected as a 2021 Sewanee Nonfiction Scholar. Her memoir is about the joys and struggles of growing up in an era when family, church and neighborhood were solid anchors. This book remembers the hope for a better life that a family had for themselves and especially their children. Chicago's Electric Blues Heritage and History: Diddley Bow Workshop

Diddley BowArchives Tie: The Black Ensemble Theater Company Records Collection Chicago has a rich heritage of internationally renowned electric blues guitar players, such as Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Buddy Guy and many more. This workshop elevates this Chicago history by exploring the rise of the electric blues and some of its musicians’ very first musical instrument, the diddley bow, a one-stringed instrument sometimes also referred to as a cigar box guitar. Inspired by the history of Chicago’s renowned blues guitarists extracted from CPL’s archives, participants will build their own cigar box guitar. Musician Coco Elysses will present the diddley bow’s history, demonstrate its sound, and then instruct on how to build the instrument. Supplies will be provided. The program runs about 1.5 to 2 hours that includes a 20-minute opening lecture on the history of Chicago’s electric blues and the diddley bow. This program offers a brief history, a diddley bow performance, with participants making their own and is for all ages, suitable for families with younger children, possibly in search of their first musical instrument. Presented as part of the Renaissance Project, this event invites participants to actively engage with the rich and often untold stories of Black history and heritage at Chicago Public Library.
