Join experienced birder and Park Volunteer Tom Locascio—a proud member of the Audubon Society and Sun City Birding Club—for a guided bird walk through Estrella Mountain Regional Park. After the walk, gather in the Nature Center classroom for an engaging presentation on the park’s feathered residents, from desert dwellers to seasonal visitors. Please wear protective clothing and closed-toe shoes, and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Restrooms and water are available at the Nature Center, though may not be accessible at the trailhead. Pets are not permitted—service animals are welcome. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just curious about the winged wonders of the desert, this program offers a great way to connect with nature and deepen your appreciation for our local wildlife. Trip difficulty: Easy. 1.25 miles on flat paved paths. Trip duration about 2 1/2 hours. No water on site but port-a-potty is at the parking lot. Limited shade and benches. We will partially walk the old front 9 of this abandoned 200-acre golf course that has been turned into a Nature Preserve. While the number of bird species doesn’t usually exceed 25, they are plentiful. Driving directions: From Dove Mountain Road, take Tangerine Rd. east for 7 miles, turn left (north) on Rancho Vistoso Blvd., go 2.2 miles to the traffic light at Vistoso Highlands Rd. Turn left and go 0.6 miles to the large parking lot on the left (take either of two entrances into the parking lot and drive to the far end near the port-a-potty). Join Ranger Eric for a guided bird walk to look and listen for resident and migrant species within the diverse desert riparian habitat of the Hassayampa River Preserve. Along the way we will discuss how to identify birds by sight and sound, about the behavioral and ecological traits that make them unique, and about citizen science apps like eBird and iNaturalist. We will walk at least 1 mile on the trails, which are mostly flat and shaded, with some uneven or sandy surfaces. Some binoculars are available to borrow. Please wear sturdy footwear and sun protection, and carry ample water for yourself. Tucson Bird Alliance: Arthur Pack Park & Crooked Tree Golf Course with Ray Deeney

Trip difficulty: Easy; Walking Distance: 2.5 miles; Trip Duration: 2 hr 45 min; Elevation Gain: none; Ground Condition: groomed trail. Drinking water not available on trail. Restrooms at the Mason Center and one restroom midway on the 2.5 mile loop. Each Fall Crooked Tree Golf Course closes to golfers to reseed the course. We have used this opportunity for the past two years to bird the golfer free course. These walks have been popular and productive, so this year we are offering three walks for the first time. We have seen Clay Colored Sparrow(twice!), Prairie Falcon(twice!), Lawrence’s Goldfinch and Sage Thrasher and many other cool birds. Each walk starts at 7:30 AM and concludes around 10 AM. We meet at the Maeveen Behan trailhead parking lot, near the Crooked Tree maintenance yard, off of the intersection of Thornydale Rd. and Overton Rd. We respect the reseeding process by not walking on any fairways, greens or tee areas. Restrooms and water fountain are available as we walk easy pathways for about one mile. c On this walk near the Nature Center, Ranger Nikki will lead the way as we look for birds and try to spot their homes camouflaged among the cholla cacti and trees. The route follows Overton Trail to GO John Trailhead, where we will then walk on the paved roadway and return to the Nature Center either via the roadway or trail. Total distance is approximately one mile. The terrain is rocky and uneven on the trail and level asphalt on the road, with a short, modest incline on the trail portion. Explore the night skies from the summit of Mt. Lemmon using Arizona’s LARGEST publicly available telescopes! Under the guidance of a professional, visitors will enjoy a brief astronomy lecture, a light dinner, and an exclusive opportunity to observe astronomical objects and phenomena. This five-hour program starts 2 hours before sunset and accommodates up to 28 people. A minimum age of 7 is required for our attendees. Mt Lemmon is located at 9,157ft in elevation and is on average 20-30 degrees colder than Tucson – yes, even in Spring and Summer. Guests are responsible for being aware of the weather and providing appropriate clothing for our cold adventure. Remember to wear comfortable closed-toed shoes. Ranger Olivia leads this picturesque hike to watch the sunset while also learning about saguaros along the way. We will see the sunset, saguaros, and maybe some evening critters as well. October 10th is also Urban Wildlife Conservation Day, which means we will also be discussing the importance of having nature and places for wildlife near urban areas, such as the area you live in! Come out to your local park to learn about the saguaros, and wildlife that are closer than you may think! You may bring your blacklight and regular flashlight to look for evening critters(optional). This hike will be about 2 miles along the Waterfall trail, where the terrain is mostly flat with the first 0.5 mile of the trail being paved, and a few spots being slightly uneven/rocky. Please wear closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water. There are restrooms and water available the trailhead but still be sure to bring plenty of water with you! Explore the night skies from the summit of Mt. Lemmon using Arizona’s LARGEST publicly available telescopes! Under the guidance of a professional, visitors will enjoy a brief astronomy lecture, a light dinner, and an exclusive opportunity to observe astronomical objects and phenomena. This five-hour program starts 2 hours before sunset and accommodates up to 28 people. A minimum age of 7 is required for our attendees. Mt Lemmon is located at 9,157ft in elevation and is on average 20-30 degrees colder than Tucson – yes, even in Spring and Summer. Guests are responsible for being aware of the weather and providing appropriate clothing for our cold adventure. Remember to wear comfortable closed-toed shoes. The Sonoran Desert has many marvelous and well-known creatures such as the javelina and the coyote, often found on postcards and lawn ornaments. But what about the lesser-known creatures—the ones that are underfoot yet unseen, that lurk only in the shadows and in our imaginations? In this collection of essays, prose poems, and illustrations, naturalist Gary Paul Nabhan and artist Robert J. Long team up to celebrate these unsung beings of the Sonoran Desert. This desert bestiary includes creatures whose existence lies largely in traditional story and belief, as well as creatures whose life cycles are so cryptic they seem mythic, such as the walking catfish and the carbunco. Positioned at the dynamic intersection of folklore and natural history, the book reflects on the reasons why human imaginations over the ages have reached into this realm of seldom seen but often intuited animals. Focusing on small animals and charismatic mini-fauna, Nabhan expands our understanding of the natural world by delightfully describing the interactions between animals and plants. This more-than-natural history is for anyone who finds joy in the marvels of the natural world. About the Author: Gary Paul Nabhan (author) Gary Paul Nabhan an Arab American writer, desert food artisan, and garden designer. He is the founder of the Sacred Plant Recovery Initiative, which works to safeguard, restore, and “rematriate” sacred and ceremonial plants that are at risk due to climate change, overharvesting, and conflict. He is the author of more than thirty books, including Agave Spirits, Jesus for Farmers and Fishes, The Nature of Desert Nature, Gathering the Desert, Ethnobiology for the Future, Last Water on the Devil’s Highway, The Desert Smells Like Rain, Arab/American, and Counting Sheep. Nabhan is the recipient of such awards as a MacArthur Genius Award and a Lannan Literary Fellowship. Robert L. Long (illustrator) Robert J. Long is an associate teaching professor of visual communication at Northern Arizona University. He earned his MFA in studio art at the University of Arizona in 2013. His visual art, made under the pen name NearsightGraphite, has been published through Frontiers in Microbiology, Manifest Press, the Confluencenter for Creative Inquiry, and Edible Baja Arizona magazine, among others. His award-winning work has been shown in juried gallery exhibitions in the United States and abroad since 2008. His art installations include Undersea Discovery (2023–present) and Wild World of Bugs (2021–present) in the Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium at the University of Arizona. In 2013, Long became Arizona’s first finalist in the internationally juried Adobe Design Achievement Awards.

The Gila River was vital to the incredible success of the Ancestral Sonoran people, or Hohokam, who built a civilization that lasted a thousand years and more. We’ll examine that civilization’s history and celebrate their accomplishments as we move along the river in search of a glimpse of the Gila’s former glory. We’ll also be looking and listening for a variety of wildlife who have returned to this resuscitated stretch of the river. The trail is approximately 2 miles and rated as moderately difficult, with stretches of loose rock, deep and sandy soil, and large rocks and other obstacles. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water. Hats and sunscreen are also highly recommended. Restrooms and water are available at the Nature Center. NO pets, please.
