This is a 60-minute guided hike to the Hanging Garden site just south of Glen Canyon Dam on Highway 89. The hike is 1.5 miles total along mostly flat, even terrain. The hike includes several stops along the way highlighting the flora, fauna, history, and geology of the area. The ranger will guide the group to the Hanging Garden, then after concluding the program invite you to return to the trailhead with them, or you are welcome to further explore the area. The area closes after sunset. Ages 6+

Laser cutters are awesome tools and HeatSync Labs is a place where you can laser cut cool projects. This is the class for anyone wanting to learn to use the laser cutter without needing supervision. Learn how to cut and engrave with both the 80 Watt and 60 Watt laser cutters. We will get hands on and everyone will make themselves a HeatSync Labs key chain. This is a 3 hour workshop please plan to be there for all of it. Laser cutters are great for cutting wood, acrylic, paper, fabric, and some other materials (it cannot cut metal). During class we will cover why some materials are not safe because of toxic fumes. Safety related to the various systems as well as fires that can occur inside the laser cutter. No experience necessary. Ages 18 and up. Those under 18 can be trained on the laser, but would still require a certified laser cutter user to supervise using the laser. We will also briefly cover some of our our hackerspace culture and norms related to cleaning the laser, cleaning other tools and work areas, cooperative efforts to improve the space and fulfill our educational mission.

Rangers Derik and Eric will lead a hike around the lake and up to the top of Lykes Lookout over 2 miles and with 160 feet elevation gain. The trail is rated as easy to moderate, however the final 100ft of the Lykes Lookout trail is steep and rocky and can be difficult for some participants. Hiking distance and route may be modified depending on heat. All hikers need water, flashlights/ headlamps, and sturdy footwear. Pre-hydrating and having electrolytes beforehand is recommended. Flashlights and blacklights can be borrowed for free from the Visitor Center. Water and restrooms can be found at the Visitor Center parking lot. National Park Service: Astronomy Nights at Wahweap Amphitheater

Park Rangers will work in concert with local astro-volunteers to conduct informal astronomical interpretation at the parking lot for the Wahweap Amphitheater. Rangers will bring GLCA telescopes and choose a variety of subjects to focus on throughout the evening. Please be aware of your headlights and take care not to shine them at the rangers or telescopes. Children should be accompanied by adults. Pets on leash must keep clear of the telescopes in order to maintain the safety of the tripods. In the event of cloud cover, rain, lightning, or other poor weather conditions, this event will be cancelled. There is an entrance fee to go to Wahweap. There is no additional fee to attend the program. The Wahweap amphitheater is located in the Wahweap Campground, across from the campground store. From the intersection of Lakeshore Dr and Wahweap Dr, go straight for about 1000 ft, then turn left at the “Wahweap Campground” sign. This parking lot also hosts the RV dump station. All Ages

Join us after dark on a night-time adventure with our Education Staff and Docents! Discover the amazing world of nocturnal life in the Sonoran Desert on this family friendly ‘crawl’. Guests will learn about Sonoran Desert ecology while taking a closer look at the local critters. Plus, you will get the knowledge you need to be prepared for your own night-time treks. Preregistration is required and limited to 24 guests. For your safety, children ages 4 and under and pets are not permitted. We will be focusing on stars and searching for the stripe that marks the path of the Milky Way across the summer sky. We’ll also seek out things like planets, galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters! Learn how this immense canyon formed and the science behind the landscape. The program is 30 minutes long and is accessible. Grand Canyon is one-mile deep, up to 18 miles wide, 277 river miles long, and displays more than 20 layers of rock The layers tell stories of oceans, deserts, mountains, and swamps that were once here, brought into existence, then swept away over the vast expanse of time. Grand Canyon is a geologically young landscape being sculpted from very old rocks. Knowing some of the stories encoded in the rock layers enriches your understanding of our planet and enhances your experience at Grand Canyon. The program is free of charge. Join park volunteer Rich Fuhrmann Jr. on a beginner’s bird walk through White Tank Mountain Regional Park. After the walk, gather in the Nature Center classroom for an engaging presentation on the park’s feathered residents, from desert dwellers to seasonal visitors. Rich brings 20 years in education, currently serving as a middle school Dean of Students. He is a recent graduate of the Arizona Master Naturalists Program, cohort 8, and holds a current Wilderness First Aid certification. A core volunteer with Maricopa County Parks & Recreation and Trail Ambassador at White Tank Mountain Regional Park, he has led interpretive bird walks and specializes in desert ecology and group safety. Please wear protective clothing and closed-toe shoes, and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Looking to get out on the water, but don’t want to do it alone? Just want to spend some quality paddle time on the lake? We’ve got just the thing! Sign up for this morning kayak excursion on Lake Pleasant. We’ll begin at the Castle Creek (4-lane) boat ramp. From there, we’ll head north, paddling our way up Castle Creek. Along the way, we’ll keep an eye out for wildlife like burros, deer, coyotes, herons, ducks, bald eagles and more. We’ll provide the kayaks, paddles, and PFD’s (personal flotation devices). You’ll want to bring plenty of water to drink, water clothes and shoes, a hat, sunscreen and snacks. You may wish to bring a change of clothes (including shoes) and/or a towel for the journey home. Safe Sitter® prepares students in grades 6-8 to be safe when they’re home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. Students learn life-saving skills such as how to rescue someone who’s choking, and helpful information like what to do if there’s severe weather. The lessons are filled with fun activities and role-playing exercises. Students even get to use CPR manikins to practice choking rescue and CPR! *Note: Students will be trained in CPR, but this will not provide them with a CPR certification. Safety Skills: Students learn how to prevent unsafe situations and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies. Child Care Skills: Students learn tips to manage behavior that will help them stay in control of themselves and the children in their care. Students also learn the ages and stages of child development, as well as practice diapering. First Aid & Rescue Skills: Learning skills such as choking rescue and CPR is often students’ favorite part of the class. Join VVAC’s Ethnobotanist, Rob Estrada, for a holistic 1/3-mile walk at VVAC’s Native American Heritage Garden and Pathway. During the interpretive walk that starts promptly at 9:00am, Rob will point out Native plants and discuss their many uses by Native peoples with some highlights such as: prickly pear, amaranth, dandelion, wild lettuce, buckwheat, clover, plantain, lambs quarters, globe mallow, yucca, thistles, and agave. Rob Estrada received his bachelor’s degree in broadcasting production from California State University, Northridge. He has a master’s degree in public history from Northern Arizona University, with an emphasis in Southwestern borderlands and a minor in Southwestern archaeology. Rob worked six seasons for the National Park Service in the Natural Resources and Interpretation departments, in both Yosemite and at Montezuma Well. Rob managed the Traditional Garden at Montezuma Well from 2015-2019 and is currently the staff ethnobotanist with Verde Valley Archaeology Center and Museum. He is also employed at Northern Arizona University with Road Scholar. He enjoys spending time with his two children, his six grandchildren, and his cat Eva, in Rimrock, Arizona. Many thanks to Rob Estrada and to all the garden volunteers for their tremendous efforts in maintaining this property and serving as Earth stewards! Address VVAC’s garden is located at 330 N. This is a 60-minute guided hike to the Hanging Garden site just south of Glen Canyon Dam on Highway 89. The hike is 1.5 miles total along mostly flat, even terrain. The hike includes several stops along the way highlighting the flora, fauna, history, and geology of the area. The ranger will guide the group to the Hanging Garden, then after concluding the program invite you to return to the trailhead with them, or you are welcome to further explore the area. Kartchner Caverns invites you to join us for a walk in the park as we uncover and learn about some of the 13 different neighboring bat species in the park. We will use bat detectors while on a walk through the beautiful desert night to see and hear some of them while learning about the diversity of these flying mammals. Boldly go where the public generally doesn’t get to walk – this walk does not go inside the cave or include any bat handling. Bring your friends and family (registration required) We highly recommend bringing these items: A headlamp or flashlight (black light for children) – red light option preferable Night vision goggles or equipment (not provided by the park) Comfortable shoes Your personal bat detector (if you have one) Plenty of water Cave Tour and live bat handling not included, walk will be slightly over a half mile. Program lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Registration is required ($15 per person fee applies). Due to the quiet nature of this walk and the duration, this event is recommended for kids 7 and older. In the event of inclement weather, the bat walk will be canceled. Ranger Nikki will lead you on an out-and-back walk to search for bark, striped-tail and giant hairy scorpions. We will also be on the lookout for other nocturnal critters such as bats, owls, tarantulas, geckos, centipedes, stink bugs and more! Bring your UV blacklight to see scorpions fluoresce and a regular flashlight to light your way. No pets, please. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring plenty of water. The J-IFT Summer Program is a hands-on, personalized, and individually focused 5-day immersion to aviation for students ages 14-18. Students will learn PDL Code, a language created by our company to work seamlessly with Minecraft and introduce the basics of coding. Using core elements from other popular languages such as Java or C++, PDL Code has its own console where students program outside of Minecraft to make things happen on our very own secure server. They can affect the game world or make their character move just by using code. Students are expected to understand the basics of using a computer, including switching between windows and using a mouse. It is also intended for intermediate Minecraft players; they should at least know the basic controls and concepts. However, the only programming knowledge required is that from level 1! We will go more in-depth in this level, including randomness, vectors, and more complicated loops and variables. Each topic has special challenges where the student can create their own programs, such as making a diamond finder. You will be able to get an individual or group photo, and after learning some training techniques you will get to try out your skills as an honorary trainer! Then you will become a sea lion’s new best friend by feeding them some fish and leave this incredible experience smelling like a Sea Lion trainer. $89 for each guest Each encounter is limited to 6 participants Zoo admission is not included in the price of a Sea Lion encounter Children age 3-11 must be with a paid adult (minimum age to participate in an encounter is 3) Children age 12-17 can participate with a non-paid adult spectator.
