Let’s see what sorts of wildlife we can spot. Birds should be active at this time and there’s not a bad chance for lizards, and small animals too. This hike will be about a 2-mile hike on the Overton trail. This trail is easy-moderate with mostly flat ground, but there are sections with loose rocks and uneven ground. There is also a slight incline at the beginning of the trail as well so please wear close-toed shoes and bring plenty of water! There are restrooms and water at the Nature Center, where we will be meeting. PLEASE NOTE: Outdoor summer programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat events. The University of Arizona: The Wasserstein geometry of random measures through superposition principles

In this talk, I will introduce the space of random measures $\mathcal{P}_p(\mathcal{P}_p(X))$, endowed with the Wasserstein-on-Wasserstein metric, where $(X, d)$ is a complete separable metric space. In this setting, we prove a metric superposition principle, that will allow us to recover important geometric features of the space. When $X$ is $\mathbb{R}^d$, we will se also the differential structure of \(\mathcal{P}_p(\mathcal{P}_p(\mathbb{R}^d))\) in analogy with the classic Wasserstein space $\mathcal{P}_p(\mathbb{R}^d)$. We show that continuity equations for laws of random measures involving the abstract concept of derivation acting on cylinder functions can be more conveniently described by suitable non-local vector fields $b:[0,T]\times \mathbb{R}^d \times \mathcal{P}_p(\mathbb{R}^d) \to \mathbb{R}^d$. In this way, we can: characterize the absolutely continuous curves on the Wasserstein-on-Wasserstein space; define and characterize its tangent bundle; prove a Benamou-Brenier-like formula; prove a superposition principle for the solutions to the standard non-local continuity equation in terms of solutions of interacting particle systems. The University of Arizona: Stochastic quantization of Yang-Mills

One of the central problems in mathematical physics is the rigorous construction of the quantum Yang-Mills theory on \mathbb{R}^4 and the proof of the existence of a positive mass gap. In this talk, I will present some recent progress on the lower dimensional cases T^2 and T^3. In particular, we construct gauge orbit spaces \mathcal{A}/~ where \mathcal{A} denotes a space of connections of negative regularity, equipped with a suitable notion of gauge equivalence ~. We then define stochastic dynamics on \mathcal{A} that respect gauge symmetry (in probability law) and induce Markov processes on \mathcal{A}/~. On lattices in any dimensions, the mixing properties of these dynamics yield the existence of a mass gap, in the strong coupling regime. Based on joint work with A. Chandra, I. Chevyrev, M. Join Ranger Eric for an early morning hike to look for and learn about resident and migratory birds of the Sonoran Desert before the day heats up! We will meet at the Quail Trailhead first and check out the nearby vegetation for birds, before g caravaning over to a primitive trail down by the Gila River, which involves a bit more moderate hiking. Even in summer, there is usually still water pooled in a lake along the river, fed by reclaimed wastewater from the Tres Rios Wetlands upstream. Along the river, we may be able to see cormorants, herons, pelicans, and other water birds. We will likely only hike about 1 mile total before it gets too hot, but may shorten the hike depending on the heat. Please carry ample water, wear sturdy footwear and sun protection, pre-hydrate and have electrolytes beforehand, and bring binoculars if you have them. Portapotties are located at Quail Trailhead. We’ll walk the majority of the trails in the park, pausing to observe wildlife, listen for birdsongs, discuss the history of the area, and generally take in the atmosphere. Yavapai College: Explore Yavapai County – The Northern Bradshaws

The Northern Bradshaw Mountains overlooking Prescott are the highest range in Yavapai County, peaking out near 8,000 feet. We’ll explore south through this region on the old Senator Highway as far as the site of the town of Goodwin, then head east to Mayer and return via Highway 69. Along the way we’ll visit old mining and homestead sites on Wolf Creek, explore the ruins of the Senator Mine, enjoy distant views from the Mt. Union Divide, and other historic and natural features. We’ll also pass though the burn area of the Goodwin fire of 2017 and talk about fire management and the role of fire in the natural ecosystem. The trip will include about two miles of moderate hiking. Expect driving on bumpy, winding roads. They are predators throughout their lives, first as nymphs underwater and rule the skies as adults. This class introduces these insects, focusing on their diversity, life cycle, and habits. We will also talk about the basics for identifying them, so that students will be ready to head to the nearest wetland to observe them. The Santa Cruz Dragonfly Festival runs all of September and this class supports the wonderful event!

Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: Ranger Walk at the Pollinator Garden

Join Ranger Eric to walk through our pollinator garden and look for insect and bird pollinators at the native plants there, as well as discuss the importance of pollinators to flowering plants, food webs, and the ecosystem. The walk will be very short, and we can break early depending on the heat. We will first meet at the Nature Center, then caravan over to the Area 1 ramada parking lot where the closest access to the garden is. Restrooms are available at the Nature Center. Mark Chen embarks on photographic journeys to bear witness to this trio of coexistence: universe, Earth, and people. Laboring the legwork of landscape photographers and with a transjector and a NASA archive, he transjects the stars onto the terrain while photographing. He matches the durations of the celestial light’s journey and the geologic formation’s age, visualizing space and time in an otherwise unfathomable scale. Mark Chen centers his multidisciplinary practice on photography. He invents and repurposes tools as he pushes media boundaries, devising new processes and designing logistics that make possible the executions of his concepts. For his latest series Pilgrimage of Light which explores the mysterious coexistence of the universe, Earth and people, Mark Chen travels to hard-to-reach wilderness with his invention of a transjector, fleetingly juxtaposing spacescapes and landscapes while he photographs them. Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: Scorpion Hike

Join Ranger Derik to look for scorpions and other nocturnal wildlife on an easy hike along portions of the Mesquite Trail and possibly Waddell Trail. We will hike 0.5-1 mile on easy grade, but occasionally rocky or uneven trail. We may shorten the hike depending on the heat or if thunderstorms occur. Wildlife may include scorpions, spiders, insects, owls, nightjars, reptiles, and mammals. Please bring your own flashlight or headlamp, ample water and electrolytes (it is highly recommended to pre-hydrate and take electrolytes before you arrive), and wear sturdy footwear. A blacklight is also recommended, but the ranger will have one to point out scorpions with. Yavapai College: Explore Yavapai County – Williamson Valley and Beyond

This road trip takes Williamson Valley Road all the way to Seligman with a return via Ash Fork and Highway 89. We’ll visit the areas of many early historic sites, including the town sites of Simmons and Walnut Creek. On the return from Ash Fork we’ll stop at the old Little Hell Canyon stage stop and a mysterious and unique signpost from the earliest days of air travel in the county. Along the way we’ll discuss the geology and natural history and many aspects of the human history of the area. There will be a few short walks of up to a quarter mile, but no serious hiking.
