The Museum of Modern Art announces a film series, Andrei Ujică, from September 11–16, 2026. This is the first complete North American retrospective of Romanian filmmaker Andrei Ujică, one of contemporary cinema's finest film essayists. Whether in confronting his own nation's dark history or in evoking his first magical encounters with the Beatles and World Cup football, Ujică—who will be present to introduce many of the screenings—interrogates the politics of image making and history writing, and the ways in which the popular culture of songs, sports, and movies insinuates itself into our collective unconscious, defines our national identities, and shapes our memories, desires, and apprehension of ourselves and the world around us. Highlights include the filmmaker presenting a work-in-progress excerpt from his latest film, Matches and Days, a meditation on how World Cup football has shaped the rhythms of his life and those of his son and grandchildren. Ujică also presents his most recent feature, TWST/Things We Said Today (2024), a personal reminiscence created in collaboration with writer Geoffrey O'Brien, about the arrival of the Beatles in New York for their August 1965 concert at Shea Stadium. At the core of his trilogy on the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ujică's The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceauşescu (2010) stitches together 24 years of state propaganda images into an expansive vision of a nation in thrall to a cult leader. In his collaboration with Harun Farocki, Videograms of a Revolution (1992), official broadcasts seem an impotent sham in the face of eyewitness accounts of the dictator's demise by ordinary citizens wielding video cameras. Out of the Present (1995) chronicles the orbital isolation of a Russian cosmonaut at the Mir space station while the Soviet Union imploded back home.

On Thursday, September 10, Dance Party All-Stars brings an evening of live music and social dancing to Bryant Park Picnic Performances. Curated by Talia Castro-Pozo, the event begins with free salsa and swing dance lessons before audiences dance the night away to performances by the Alfredo De La Fé All Star Band and the George Gee Swing Orchestra. Celebrating the rich traditions of Latin jazz, salsa, and swing, the program features legendary violinist Alfredo De La Fé, marking the 60th anniversary of his professional career, and one of the leading bands of the modern swing revival, promising a high-energy night of music and movement. Bryant Park Picnic Performances presented by Bank of America is a free outdoor performing arts festival in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. His screenplay Lost In His Prime won the 2004 Hollywood Gateway national screenplay competition, and his early work earned recognition in numerous statewide fiction and poetry competitions. His play The Glitch premiered Off-Broadway at the Jerry Orbach Theater in the fall of 2025 to nearly unanimous critical praise, and follows a woman who visits an AI lab to meet a simulated version of her future child, only to discover that her daughter’s actual spirit may be trying to connect with her through a glitch in the software. He is currently working on a play about AI and online dating, and developing numerous software projects for theater and film makers. NUOYA LI is a strategic tech leader with 10+ years of global experience driving AI innovation, digital transformation, and product strategy across North America, Europe, and Asia. At Forest Friends Innovation Studio, she is pioneering the application of recommendation systems, image analysis, and automated matching in the performing arts, bridging human-centered design with technical innovation. Nuoya graduated magna cum laude from Brown University with a concentration in Applied Math-Economics and holds her master degree from Columbia University in Economics. She is also a multimedia artist. Alongside her tech career, she studies acting at The Barrow Group, ballroom dance at Fred Astaire, and ballet and theater dance at Ballet Arts, and performs dance and improv. Founded by Ronald K. Brown in 1985 and based in Brooklyn, EVIDENCE focuses on the seamless integration of traditional African dance with contemporary choreography to provide a unique view of human struggles, tragedies, and triumphs. Brown uses movement as a way to reinforce the importance of community in African American culture and to acquaint audiences with the beauty of traditional African forms and rhythms. His work has been presented internationally for over 20 years, most recently at ODC/SF, On the Boards, CAP/UCLA, MCA Chicago, and American Dance Festival. He was a selected artist in the 2014 Whitney Biennial, a Guggenheim Fellow, a United States Artists Fellow, and has received a Foundation for Contemporary Art award, a Doris Duke Artist Award, a Frankie Award, and four New York Dance and Performance Bessie Awards. His writing has appeared in BOMB, Small Press Traffic’s The Back Room, InDance, SLUTS anthology from Dopamine Press, and more. His podcast, Are You For Sale? examines the ethical entanglement between dancemaking and funding. His two records—SADONNA: The Album and sueño, featuring his original songs—are available on all streaming platforms.
