Following its critically acclaimed 2025 debut in New York, Syd Mead: Future Pastime comes to the West Coast at the Transamerica Pyramid Annex Gallery, opening Thursday October 8th from 6pm to 8pm. Few artists have shaped how the world pictures tomorrow as thoroughly as Syd Mead. For more than half a century, the self-described "visual futurist" set the vocabulary that designers, engineers, architects and filmmakers still draw on. He showed that the future could be drafted with precision rather than guessed at. That work began in industry, where Ford and U.S. Steel hired him to imagine what came next, and it reached millions through the films he helped design, among them Blade Runner, TRON and Aliens. His gouache paintings show tomorrow with enough engineering logic to work as blueprints. But his real subject was never the machines. It was the people living with them: a casual drive through cerulean space, mechanical hounds racing above the skyscrapers, a dinner party in steel couture. Mead's future is neither dystopian nor abstract. It is lived-in, leisurely and deeply human. Thirty years after his last major Bay Area exhibition - just as the tools he forecast are finally arriving - Future Pastime asks San Francisco to reconsider the future it is building, and who it is for. The 29th United Nations Association Film Festival opens Thursday, Oct. 15, at Mitchell Park Community Center in Palo Alto, with remarks by Mayor Vickie Veenker and the presentation of a City of Palo Alto proclamation recognizing the 29th UNAFF. Opening Night begins with the West Coast premiere of The Comfort Dogs of Uganda, directed by Australian filmmaker Richard Wainwright. The documentary follows former child soldiers in northern Uganda finding unexpected bonds with rescued village dogs. Next is the world premiere of Last Christian in Bethlehem, from local Bay Area team and UNAFF alums, Robert Levering, Stephen Talbot, and Stephanie Mechura. This feature documentary provides interviews and footage of Palestinian Christians living in the West Bank. The night concludes with Through the Body, a film about Keith Terry, an Oakland percussionist and dancer. Director Andrew Reissiger journeys with Terry as he builds a global community through the International Body Music Festival. A special dance performance will also take place at this screening.

The program opens with the world premiere of "The Fixer," a 12-minute stop-motion documentary from local filmmakers Mimi Chakarova and Lydia Chávez. The film follows a 10-year-old girl determined to fix what is broken in a fragile world. The program continues with "Under the Canopy," directed by Michal Krawczyk. Set in Colombia’s Andean-Amazon Piedmont, the documentary follows a community-led effort to map biodiversity and restore forests while preserving Indigenous ecological knowledge. **Admission is free.** This special UNAFF & Kids Program offers an opportunity to see two short documentaries suitable for all audiences. The 29th United Nations Association Film Festival presents a free shorts program on Sunday, Oct. 18, in Palo Alto, featuring three documentaries that explore wildlife conservation, wrongful incarceration, and the global impact of cryptocurrency. The program opens with "Crossing the Divide," directed and produced by local filmmaker Talia Frank. The 11-minute documentary examines how roads fragment wildlife habitats and explores the potential of wildlife crossings to restore animal movement and strengthen ecosystems. Next is "The Dreaming Game," directed and produced by Jordan Salvatoriello. The film follows 70-year-old Raymond Gaines, a Boston native and lifelong baseball fan, as he returns to Fenway Park after spending 47 years in prison for a murder he did not commit. As he awaits a decision on his case, Gaines works to rebuild his life and pursue his long-sought freedom. The program concludes with "The Market and the Monkey’s Paw," directed and produced by "Graham New, Leo Safir, and Oliver Richards. Set in El Salvador, the documentary explores the country’s adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender through the perspectives of market vendors, educators and community members, examining questions of economic inclusion, tourism, gentrification and digital finance. **Admission is free.** The special program from UNAFF offers an opportunity to see three short documentaries and discover the work of filmmakers from the Bay Area and beyond. Join local naturalist and historian Keith Mangold for a fascinating look at this remarkable stretch of the San Mateo County coast. Mangold's presentation takes a holistic approach, exploring both the natural world and the human history of Devil's Slide, from the plants and animals that thrive along the coast to the generations of people who have wrestled with the challenges of getting safely along this dramatic and sometimes treacherous landscape. A longtime El Granada resident, Mangold has volunteered with San Mateo County Parks at Devil's Slide and Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, as well as with Half Moon Bay State Parks and the San Mateo County Resource Conservation District. His deep involvement in the Coastside has given him a unique perspective on the area's history, geology, wildlife and environmental challenges. Spend an evening in Haight-Ashbury with Tommy Netzband, founder of the San Francisco Ghost Society and a paranormal investigator with more than 20 years of experience. You may have seen him on the History Channel or Travel Channel. Now you can join him for a ghost hunting adventure of your own. During this two-hour walk, Tommy shares stories from his team’s real investigations that you won’t hear on any other tour. Try custom-built ghost hunting equipment, learn how investigators approach unexplained activity, and ask the questions you’ve always wanted to ask. Skeptics are always welcome! Tommy is also the author of Haunted Haight®: Ghost and True Crime Tales from Haight-Ashbury and Beyond. If you’ve read the book, now you can walk with the spirits and visit the places behind the stories. Things can get spooky, but there’s plenty of fun along the way, including chances to win prizes.
